ok, I barely know how the PS3 works.

I normally put in a BD, see the blue round disc, play it and voila.

well, last week I watched Ratatouille, everything went fine, finished the movie, turned off the system.

today, I put in spiderman 3 ... I see no blue round disc, and instead of the regular blue background, it's brownish yellow. I can't play anything, I tried terminator 2 and ratatouille again ... still no go.

what's wrong?

pending things to try:
-system update : man, this takes forever 25% last I checked. I can't believe this thing has wifi :)
-try a PS3 game

tried the following:
-ordinary dvd, still can't play and there's the round thing at the upper right corner all the time and it doesn't go away.

Are you sure Spiderman 3 was a BD? That symbol normally shows up when you put a regular DVD in not a Blu-ray perhaps you grabbed the wrong disc?

i dont have spiderman 3 in SD. plus I bought the 3 disc trilogy.

the 3 other movies I tried don't play as well ... there's no option on the menu to play disc. I think thats the blue disc icon Im missing.

also tried:
-master off and on
-master off for an hour
-boot on without a disc (background is still brown)
-checked HDMI cables at the back to the projector and to the receiver

When you scroll through the cross menu and choose video, does the DVD option come up? Maybe the autoplay option in the setup menu has been turned off?

edit, darn, you posted while I was typing. Any way, my background was grey at first, but now is the yellow-brown you're talking about. There's been no effect on my ability to watch movies.

You said the system has a round thing at the top right. That is the symbol showing that the system is "thinking." Have you tried turning it off and letting it power cycle (unplug it for a few minutes). Also, are you sure you are in the Video subsection on the XMB? Lastly, if I remember right you won't be able to watch a movie while updating.

i only tried to update after it didn't work. and I tried the power cycle thing. both instantly and with an hour wait.

the blue disc Icon im missing is the BD-ROM icon. im rtfm now. :) edit: ok, there's no troubleshooting on the online manual (user guide)

If the screen color does not seem right: Back to top

The PLAYSTATION®3 system's background color changes automatically in time with the hour of the day.

-updated to 2.1
-tried other SD DVD's
-tried other BD's that played before
-tried system restore

i'm just not seeing the blue disc icon under the video menu.

I did some looking online about the issue. It seems some people had luck reformatting their PS3 hard drive (you will lose all stored data unless you back it up). Reformatting and backing up are both built in functions of the PS3 so it is under the System tab. If that doesn't work then the people ended up getting a replacement from Sony.

I hope the former fixes the issue for you, it would suck to have to wait for the replacement and be in the small percentage whose PS3 broke .

how do I format?
Turn the PS3 on then go to the "Settings" tab then go to the "System Settings" subsection. If you want to reformat you will need an external hard drive or some other portable media plug it in and go to "Back up utility" then follow the directions. Once ready to reformat go to "Format Utility." Follow the directions and you should be good to go.

Yeah, that step is completely optional and since you have no data would be pointless in your situation.

Good luck. I really hope this works for you.

Did you buy it local or online? If local, can you check with the shop and see if they will replace it?
