PS3 – Optimum Audio Configuration?

I’ve read several posts regarding the HD audio limitations of the PS3. I’ll be connecting the PS3 to a Denon 3808ci. What "singular" audio connection/combination of bitstream, linear PCM, HDMI and optical digital audio (SPDIF) will maximize the audio output quality for the following:

PS3 games
Blu-ray movies
Standard DVD
dts 5.1 music

Connect the PS3 using HDMI and select the audio output to linear PCM. Just have the PS3 decode all the sound and you will also have multichannel SACD as well if you have a 60gb or 80gb.

Having Sony unlock the PS3's ability to transmit the new CODEC's via HDMI bitstream comes to mind. I won't be buying anymore BD's until they do. It's not like they don't know how; This is about the same old song and dance we've been hearing for years: Copyright issues-and I've heard enough.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. The hdmi chip on the PS3 cannot do bitstream of TrueHD, DTS-HD/MA. It is a hardware limitation. So I guess you won't be owning any BD's ever. But then again who cares once the PS3 gets the DTS-HD/MA firmware update.

If something gets a firmware update, does that mean all older models would have to be sent in or not an option for them?

I am wanting a BD player, but haven't made the jump. Is SACD still a continuing format or will it just die? I'm looking at the PS3 and hoping it does support this as well. I think I read that the 60 and 80 gig models do. I am not much of a gamer, but I've read it's upconverting is one of the best and it also has the SACD and BD options and gaming if ever wanted. For SACD is the audio output as good as other players? If you are wanting SACD, I woud think you would want it connected the best way and I thought that was through 5.1 channel output. Has that changed?

for SACD audio, will the PS3 bitstream it? I have a receiver that can decode it.

The 60GB and 80GB PS3 can play SACD. You can play 2ch sacd by using analog connections but the only way to get multi-channel sacd playback you need HDMI set to Linear PCM on the PS3.

Which means my Processor would need HDMI and I'm using an Outlaw 990. There goes that possibility. When is outlaw going to replace this dinosaur? ^_^
