First off,i would like to thank clint and the rest of the crew and forum members here at audioholics for putting together a very, very well thought out website and an incredibly informative forum. Althought this is my first post here,i have been lurking about for the last month or so on a daily basis to feed my voracious audio/video appetite. I find the information here to be top notch and sometimes, amusing. Now,to the matter at hand.

I have a problem that i feel is quite simple compared to some others that ive seen in here and considering the amount of components involved,it shouldnt be an issue to find an answer here.

I have a yamaha 5840 receiver,a playstation2 and a tv. I have the tv coming into the receiver utilizing the analog audio outs on the television ( no cbl or satt boxes to pull audio out of ). I have the PS2 going into the receiver via toslink. The problem i am running into is severe audio dropouts when i use the optical output on the ps2. The dropouts occur every 3-5 minutes or so and its only a second or two at a time. The problem does not present itself when i use analog audio outputs with the playstation. I have the ' digital output' option on the playstation2 activated. I notice that when the audio dropout occurs, the ' pcm' light/indicator on my receiver blinks off at the same time. I'm assuming that since the receiver is indicating a loss of pcm signal that the problem is somewhere between the ps2 and the receiver and NOT the receiver itself. Has anyone had issues using digital audio outs with the playstation2 ? Any suggestions....ideas ?

Sorry for the long winded approach....I did multiple searches before posting in regards to this issue and never found anything relating to the ps2's....any help would be much appreciated...

again, sorry for the wordy post and i appreciate everyone in here for all the info that i have devoured over the last month or two....thanks !

First off, WELCOME. I trust you will find your stay here pleasant. Now on to the question at had, it sounds like it is loosing signal to the receiver. I would try several things:

1. try a different optical input

2. try a different cable

3. try a different optical source like a DVD player

It seems either the Toslink cable is bad or it is an internal problem with the PS2.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

thanks for the help,i appreciate it. I didnt even think about using the other optical input because i was telling myself that it must be my ancient ps2 as opposed to the brand new receiver ! The optical cable is brand new,but i know that the possibility of it being bad is quite real....as far as a dvd player goes,i dont have one in use as of yet to test another optical output..the optical cable seems a bit loose going into the ps2...maybe im just used to rca/analog type connects,i dunno...anyhoo..thanks for the help...i appreciate it.

That might be the problem, a loose fitting jack. That would explain the intermittent problem. You could try to tape the Toshlink cable to the PS2, it is a poor man's way to fix it, but it might work.

This is probably a dumb question but, since you said it was loose, did you leave the little caps on the ends of the optical cable? I could see how that'd cause signal drops ;). I've seen it done many times too.

Yeah, definitely make sure you don't have the dust cap on. The toslink connector only goes in one way - it's rounded at the bottom and squareish on the top. It should snap in snugly.

The dust caps were definately pulled off......it doesnt snap into place on the ps2 output,so it may be a case for a bit of tape as mentioned earlier on. Ive had the ps2 for about 2 years and never used the optical output so i wasnt sure if the loose fitting is a ps2 standard.....with the intermittent audio drop offs, maybe it is a case of just not fitting correctly....i will certainly give it a shot when i get to the homestead..thanks to all for the advice, once again.

My first thought is cable; especially if it's loose. I have had no trouble with my PS2 audio through the Toslink--mine's about 2yrs old as well & I've only been using the optical the last 6 months. I'd say, start with switching inputs on the AVR to eliminate that, check the connection on both ends, then swap out cables. Basically process of elimination.

be sure u have the optical calbe with the fitting so it only goes in one way, my dad bought an optical cable at walmart and it had a round connector at the end, hadn't ever seen this before, and it fits loosley into the input of his receiver as well, hadn't expereinced loss of signal yet, he doesn't want to go get another one, but I think its just waiting to happen.
