Pros/Cons of using Video Out/In on a Receiver

Hey question,

I just received my new receiver and I didn't use my Video Connections on my old Receiver and didn't see a need to start now. I basically have my Optical cord from both my DVD player and Satelite Receiver connected to the Receiver. My video connections go straight from the DVD Player (composite) to the TV, along with my Satelite Receiver (HDMI). Why would I want to go through the Receiver for this??? Thanks...

Depending on the receiver, only for the convenience of not having to swith inputs on the TV. ??Composite from the DVD player??

Component...duh.
So which is it? Composite or Component?

There's not point to putting the video through the receiver if you're using different types of connections for your DVD Player and Sat Receiver anyway. I'd only be useful if both were Component-Video, for example. Then you wouldn't have to change inputs on your TV, only the Receiver.
