Pros/Cons: Connecting video cables thru AVR

What is the advantage or disadvange of connecting video cables thru the AVR as oppose to the TV? I've read that video connections should always go directly to the TV for better picture quality. However, I've been reading Audiohoics tips section and it shows the video connections going to the AVR then to the TV. What gives?

Thanks for enlightening me.

The only advantage as far as i know is being able to use the receiver for AV switching.

I've never noticed any lack of quality going through my receiver. Right now, everything goes through it. Once I upgrade my TV, all the video will go straight there, but that's mainly because the receiver (an older one) doesn't have component or HDMI input/outputs. The audio will continue to go to the receiver, though.
