Projector mounting, stupid question?

If you want cable TV you will need a cable box.

I was planning to use my Onkyo 9555 two channel integrated amp but then my audio system will be out of use. I suppose I'll need a 5.1 surround sound receiver.

Those kinds of devices do have coaxial inputs don't they? So then I'd simply run a hdmi cable from the amp to the projector?

First you'll need some kind of device with a TV tuner in it, like a VCR, or a digital cable box if you have digital cable, if you actually want to watch TV. Most (if not all) receivers don't have TV tuners. Then you can run the sound from there into your amp (assuming your VCR/cable box can't connect directly to the speakers) for audio.

Keep in mind that standard def TV doesn't look very good blown up by a projector.

By the way, it seems sort of pointless to have a big projection screen and not have the surround sound system to match, so a 5.1 receiver is probably a necessity in any case.

With all the tuner issues plus the mounting concerns, you might be better off getting an LCD or plasma with integrated speakers and tuner.

Cheers,

i do watch a lot of tv

I guess then I'll have to get a Comcast hd cable box. And a 5.1 receiver.

I've seen tv displayed on an Optoma dv11 projector/ Not great, but not horrible either. My choice at this point is the new Panasonic ax200. It fits my tight budget and should work in my living room, which is moderately bright during the day.

I thought about Plasma, but the 600 watts of power the 52 inch or bigger units draw is just too much for my pockets. If you have not noticed, the price of electricity has gone up along with the price of gasoline. Thank you President Bush once again for causing me additional financial distress.

LCD seems nice, but the ones I seem to gravitate towards are the higher priced Sony 120hz units.

It brings me back to projection, which offers a big image, doesn't draw 600 watts, and for the projector I'm considering, isn't in the $3,000 range....

I've solved my mounting problem with a plan to built a table to set behind my couch. I suppose I'll figure it all out once all the gear arrives.

Hi, could you post some shots of your silver mounting thing-y-ma-jig? I'm considering something similar as my ceilings are 12 feet high.

You didn't drill into the projector did you?
I use some extra legs I bought from Studiotech for my DIY av rack. No, there are no holes in the projector. It sits on magic bumpers, so it's fairly secure.

I like that idea

Using your method, I could reduce the height of the table so as not to interfere so much with the window it will be in front of.

I like it...

Where did you get the extenders and the magic bumpers?

thanks

I bought the extenders/legs from Studiotech to build an av rack, side tables and a dvd/book rack. I use the left-over for the projector. They come in various lengths. You can find them here http://www.studiotech.com/products/plasma_tv_stands/high_fidelity_hf-33/index.html

They are not the cheapest, but they are good stuff and very versatile. Alternately, you can go to Lowes and buy their extenders for less money, but the quality is lower. I bought the magic bumpers at Target, but other places should have them too.

You can find many uses for these extenders. Here is the av rack I originally I bought them for.
