Problems with CD player or receiver ???

When my stereo is on loud for a while, my CD's start skipping.
I have one of those seperate Sony 400 CD players and an older Yamaha receiver. The longer it's on, the more skipping occurs. It can't be that all of my CD's are skipping because of scratches, so what's going on ?? I don't know if there's any way to "clean" the CD laser as it it about 5 yrs old and has been used a lot, but I'm thinking that there's a problem with the receiver, right ? There's no problems though when my Sirius is on, going through my receiver, at a loud volume for a long time- only when CD's are playing- any suggestions please ??

Get a universal dvd player, and use it. I prefer Yamaha or Denon.

I don't know what he's talking about either- maybe he didn't read my post ??!!

A universal dvd player is one that will play anything, including DVD-A and SACD. Any dvd player will play a cd.

There is no need for a stand alone cd player anymore, unless you want to listen to a cd and watch a dvd at the same time. And, even that will take a tricky, useless hook-up.

OK, so is there a problem with my receiver or CD player ???
The CD's don't skip if it's on low volume ??? You're NOT addressing my question!

Yes I am. If I am recommending a new player, I would think you could come to the conclusion I believe the problem is the player.

Budget players that are getting alot of attention.

The fact that you gave NO explanation at all, and just said "get a dvd player" made me feel that you weren't really helping me, as I was looking for a little more elaboration, some kind of explanation. So my 400 Disc Sony player is garbage now- no fixing it at all- that's it, get a dvd player ?? Thanks for your time.

Rather than get involved in a theoretical discussion, I'll just say this.

It sounds like physical vibrations are messing up your CD player.

Since you choose to confront responders who are trying to help, I'll leave it up to you how you choose to remedy this.

Markw out...

Give me a brake- I'm just trying to do a little research, trying to get an understanding as to what is CAUSING the problem. There's got to be SOME explanation to this. I'm not just gonna go out, spend a few hundred bucks cause one guy says "get a dvd player" ! And it can't be physical virations cause I'm nowhere near it when it happens and it gets worse and worse the longer it's on.

Vibrations are from the music. I have never, in my personal experience, seen a Sony cd player that didn't skip. I think they are better now, but the old ones just plain sucked.

You can probably pick-up a new player for about the same cost as repairing your Sony. And, after you repair it, I bet it continues to skip.

My recommendation is only one of many you will get. People are not just waiting to answer your question. It takes a little time. But, if you continue to get your feathers ruffled, it may be the only one.

OK, thank you- "vibrations are from the music"...that's why I'm posting here!
I would never think that the loud music is the actul cause of the skipping.
So how does one play their music loudly without the CD player skipping ?

As you can see, we did all that talking, and came back to my first response!;)

I am recommending a universal dvd player because it will play anything. No need for another stand alone cd player. There are universal 5-disc players as well.

Or, you can take a chance on the new brand I mantioned. But, I prefer Yamaha or Denon.

LOL ! I just knew you were going to say that !! Maybe I should try moving my speakers a little farther away from the cd player before I go buy a new unit ??
If that doesn't work, I'll look into a new unit ! Thanks Zumbo, it's been fun !

There may be some type of gizmo out there to absorb the vibrations. But, if you don't have a dvd player, here is a good reason to get one.

Fun for sure!:D

there are some audio racks made for vibration control and isolation, like this one, but thay tend to be a tad expensive.

LOL. That does look like quite the rack.

Seriously, if you really want to keep the CD player, maybe just some stryrofoam blocks underneath it would help. Heck, give it the designer touch and wrap them in fabric if the looks are offending.

Where is your CD player in relation to the speakers? Maybe the player is too sensitive to vibrations?

Sony players are notorious for lasers slowly failing.
As time goes on it gets worse.
All three Sony players I've owned, skipped due to lame lasers.
All were top of Sony's line; at the time.
Now, I use a Sony DVP-S7700 DVD Player only as a spare.
In it's day it was a $1,000+ unit, and the laser slowly went bad after six months. And it skipped.
I understand zumbo was short, and to the point; and you were looking for a more detailed explanation.
He was also giving you good advice!

OK Rickster71, thank you for a better explanation. So I assume, since no one mentioned it, that there is no repairing of these either (or not worth it).
Last night I moved the speakers away from the player, and had the volume lower and sure enough, still skipping. What I don't get is how it skips more and more the longer it's on- after 20 min it's so much worse.

The reason I'm not thrilled with the responses is that I love having 400 CDs in the one unit, it's such a time saver switching cd's, and space saver since all the cases are kept boxed up in the basement- I've LOVED this unit for 5 yrs !!

Be patient with me Zumbo...I fully understand your suggestion for a DVD player and the fact that most of you don't like Sony CDP's so I will ask only once, is there ANY other unit that holds 300-500 cd's all at once that's worth the price for a new one and getting a 5 yr warranty through Circuit City (they're great with their warranties) and just going through the change again in 5 years ???
