Hoping someone can help me. It seems that my surround speakers keep cutting in and out. I'm positive its my receiver b/c I hear a small click (the same click the receiver makes when I turn it on) when the speakers cut out. Anyone have a similar problem?

Time for a new receiver. It's dying, and you can do much better than Sony's DE line of receivers.

What's your price range? I'd recommend looking into something like the Onkyo TX-SR503 or TX-SR602 (603 coming soon), Marantz SR4500, Harman Kardon AVR-235, and probably the offerings from Denon, Yamaha and Pioneer too.

Make sure your speaker wires aren't touching at the rear of the speakers, or at the back of the receiver. It sounds like a short, and the unit is going into protection mode.

If only the rear speakers are cutting out, then it probably isn't a wire short, and the whole unit would go into "protect", at least the ones I've see did. This sounds like something different, but it can't hurt to check your connections.

I watched a movie last night and did not have any problems. I'll check the wires though. I guess if it dies my price range is around $250 - $300. I don't have a really big living room and have been pretty happy w/ my Sony up until now. I guess I'm not a super serious audio/videophile, just like to have movies / XBox in DD.

no likey sony

For the previous poster, for the same amount of money you paid for your sony receiver, you could have bought a better receiver other than that sony.

I hate to burst your bubble but sony is NOT a great receiver in these neck of the woods! ;)

I must agree...I dispise Sony's receivers and CD players and DVD players. They make good TV's though! :)

And good headphones if you're willing to lay out the cash (MDR-7506 or MDR-V6, about $100). Great, reference quality headphones.

OK so back to my receiver. Things now seems to be getting worse. I checked the connections in the back and they are fine. Also, when I tap the top of the unit, I can hear the "click" when the unit turns the surrounds on/off again. It seems to be happening more often now that I lose sound from the surrounds. I fear my receiver may be on its last legs even though its only 3 years old. Is this common? I'd hate to think I'm going to need to buy a new receiver every few years.

I just read a post about someone having what sounded like a similar problem saying that they had a "short in the wire". And all they did was replace the speaker wire. Does this sound like it could be my prob?

The easy way to find out is to remove all of the surround speaker wires from the receiver, then add each one back, one at a time, and see if the problem exists with only one speaker. It's possible, but usually a wire short would cause the whole receiver to go into "protect" mode.

Did anyone ever ask what speakers you have as surround and what their specs are?

My surrounds are Yamaha satellites (100 W max, 6 ohm)
