Problem with Onkyo TX-SR605 Receiver

I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver and hooked up the KEF KHT-3005 5.1 speaker package to it. However, after hooking up the speakers to the receiver it turns off almost immediately after being powered on. According to the manual this is due to the amp protection circuit being activated. After consulting the manual I tried the microprocesser reset procedure and this was not fruitful. The receiver stays on when no speakers are hooked up, the "amp protection circuit" issue is only occuring when speakers are hooked up to the receiver. Am I encountering a receiver problem or some sort of conflict between receiver and speakers? I am hesitant to ship this receiver off to have it serviced given that it is brand new, if this problem is in any way not due to a hardware failure. Thanks in advance for your responses!

Amended from below: This issue appears to be localized to the Front R Speaker terminals. All other terminals can be occupied without shutdown issue except this one.

Welcome to the forum!

Be sure to double-check all of the speaker wire connections to make sure that you haven't created a short circuit. If you have stray copper wires touching from one terminal (red) to the other terminal (black) on any of your speakers, or where you connect to the receiver, then you could certainly experience a sudden shutdown.

Also, you may want to try connecting one speaker at a time. Perhaps the issue is in the speakers. By trying one at a time, you may be able to narrow down the possible causes.

Thank you very much! I just took your advice and connected one at a time and I found this: My problem is only occuring when a speaker occupies the Front R speaker terminals. It does not matter which of my speakers is plugged in to this terminal either. If I leave this unoccopied I do not experience the problem. It is beginning to seem like it is a hardware problem, although very specific. Any ideas?

How important is it to you to have sound coming from the front right of your room? :) Just kidding.

No specific cause it popping into my mind at the moment, although others here might have some great advice. Just give them a little bit to respond, as it tends to be a little slow on a weekend afternoon.

Is it still possible to exchange the unit for a new one from the place that you bought it? My policy is simple - if I can return something that doesn't work, I do it. I don't pay any attention at all to the little signs in the box that say, "Don't bring this back to where you bought it" and such things. I'm not going to go through the hassle of having something serviced if I can just drive back to the store and swap it out.

Unfortunately it is not possible to exchange it still, I had it for awhile before I had a chance to set it up (getting speakers took longer than I intended). I was curious to see if I had the speakers set up so I used the audessey auto speaker set up that has the speakers play tones. Upon reaching the Front Right speaker test the receiver immediately shuts off. I am unsure if this is due to nothing being plugged in or a further implication that there is something funky with this portion of the receiver.

Sorry that you can't exchange it. Not to have you troubleshoot this to the Nth degree, but here are some things you might want to check before going down the road of bring it in for service.

1. Do you own a multi-meter or the like that you could use to check the continuity of the speaker terminals? If so, you could check if there is a short circuit occuring at the front right speaker jacks on the Onkyo.

2. If you don't have such a meter, you can visually try to see if anything would be causing a short circuit at the terminals:
  • You can check the front right speaker jacks on the Onkyo and see if there is any sort of metal connection between the two (a stray wire or the like). Probably not given what you've been doing, but always worth a quick look.
  • Assuming that's not the problem, you could (and if it's still under warranty, then you may prefer to have it serviced compared to what I'm about to say) take the cover off and look at the front right terminals from the inside and see if there's any errant metal connecting the two.

There are other things that could be wrong, but those are some simple physical checks. Other people here have more in-depth electronics knowledge than me and may have far better suggestions.

Of course, the other obvious solution is - this is an excellent excuse to go out and get one of this year's models! :)
