problem solved guys.... ugh- there is a short in the dvd audio outputs on my dvd player. if i wiggle it, it plays. time to return it. thanks for all your help though. If not too late, is that the connector on the player or the plug on the cable from it? Have you swapped cables by chance? Cables do have cold joints with the exact same symptom.
