Problem Playing DVD-Audio- Please Help

Here is my setup:

DVD-Audio Player - Samsung HD950
Receiver - Harmon Kardon AVR135

I am having trouble getting any sound from my 6 Channel Direct input to play my DVD Audio Discs. I have all 6 input and outputs connected with 2 sets of component cables. Currently, I do not have a subwoofer in my system- that will be resolved in a few weeks.

Can you guys think of any settings/connections that may be incorrect? Could it somehow be relevant that i don't have a sub plugged in?
I also have an optical connection from the DVD player to the receiver.

I've checked and both devices support DVD-Audio, as they both have the correct input outputs. Any ideas?

Thanks

I know nothing of the 950, but sometimes the default settings of these players is such that the hi-res portion of the disc is not playable without changing something in the menu. For example, my player's factory set default has SACD playability limited to hi-res stereo. I had to go into the menu and enable hi-res multi-channel for it to play that portion of the disc.

Explore the menu (and your manual) a bit. Hope the solution is as simple as that, mercury!

cheers,

Yes, as super mentioned go through the manual; actually both the DVD and receiver.

I listen with my mouth open...
Have you gone through the setup procedures to set it for playback???

Receiver needs to be set for multi channel out put.
The DVD player also in the setup allows for changes.
My Samsung can be set for Digital, then it senses which format is hooked up, Digital Cox or Optical.
Also allows for normal audio and multi channel. It it doesnt know your using multiple interfaces it defaults to normal audio.

yes i have gone thru the setup procedures on my receiver- at least as far as i can tell. 5.1 works just fine from my cable box, which is hooked up optically.
if there is some way to configure the 6 channel direct, i'm not seeing it or finding something in the manual.

as far as the dvd player goes, i'm not seeing a setting that lets you choose optical/coaxial/6 channel etc. its an upconverting player so i have hdmi running to my tv, optical for normal dvds, and 6 analog out for my dvd audio.

still perplexed.

There should be something, somewhere in the dvd player's setup menus, for dvd-audio, and sacd (it's a universal player, right?).

Plus, you know that you don't use dvd mode to play dvd-audio discs? You use Multi-Channel mode. There should be a button on front of your receiver, to push for "Multi-Channel", just like you push "DVD", to watch a dvd movie.

The wording in your post sounded like you might not be sure of this. Don't mean to insult you, if this is what you've been doing.
Good luck!

i've determined with harman that it isn't receiver related, unless the inputs are messed up, which is obviously highly unlikely.. now i just have to figure out whan on earth i'm doing wrong with the dvd player

You may have to try setting the setup menu on PCM not bitstream?
DVD manual must have some audio setup for DVD-A mode, no?

so it should be on PCM, right?
The only real instructions in the manual just say to plug everything into the 6 analog outputs.

the only thing i have to do on the receiver isto set it to 6 channel.

i'm really hoping this is just some silly oversight on my part.

The multi channel mode on my HK is called 6/8 channel direct. i've been trying to get the sound there, not the normal dvd setting, which uses my digital coax connection.

HK says all i need to do is use the 6/8 Channel Direct to get it working on the receiver end. I can't see anywhere in my DVD manual that states how to change which audio output to use. Right now i've got HDMI running to my tv, coax digital to my DVD input on the HK, and the 6 analogs going to my 6/8 Channel Direct input on my HK.

I also have tried setting it to multi channel, 2 channel stereo, pcm, bitstream without any real luck.

My DVD player is capable us sending a digital DVD audio signal if you are only running 2 channel stereo. Obviously i want the multi-channel with the analogs, but no such luck yet.

Does anything play from the analogs? Just try a cd and see what happens.

my reciever has a little button marked 6 ch direct input.
all my reciever does is bass management - volume control and 6 amplfiers for my mid/tweeters.

my speakers are bi amped.

my dvd player does the rest.

I almost never listen to - fm or my dvr/vcr thru my reciever.

very simple - I love it.

when I push eject or power on my dvd player
the projector turns on/sources the dvd player and then my reciever turns on - the reciever's switched outlet turns on big relays(plugged into 3 seperate outlets/breakers) to power up my amp's/sub.

your reciever must have a button to directly source the 6/8 ch input.

You seem to have done all the right things. Have you tried playing a SACD or even a regular CD to see if you are getting anything from the HD950's analog outputs?

I had the same problem when I first set up my Denon DVD. It had an advanced setup called "Priority", where you selected "Audio" or "Video" mode. The secret was selecting "Audio' to allow the multichannel DVD-a and SACD playback. I looked up your Samsung, and didn't see a similar setting, but Pg 43 of your manual has the DVD-A setup instructions. Looks like you've set your receiver correctly, so the problem is probably with one of the DVD players' audio settings. Good luck...these things can be screamingly frustrating.

Just out of curiosity........when you have the receiver in the 6/8 channel direct mode, have you tried hooking up a known output (from another device) to the 6 inputs on the back of the receiver and see if the receiver is actually working (or set up) right?

If that works than the problem is with the DVD player.

I had a similar problem with my Yamaha DVD player when I first got it. Wouldn't work in the digital modes. Through the process of elimination it ended up the problem was with my B&K proc. The ribbon cable for the digital input board had come off inside the unit. DROVE ME NUTS! Luckily the factory repaired it quickly.

Sorry you have to return it, but glad you figured it out now, before it was too late to return it. Good going! :)
