yea thats what i did, so i know that the audio input works on the receiver.

so on the cable box which is the Direct TV HD receiver there is an audio menu but the only options are Language which is on English and a DOlby Digital which u can only turn on and off. I had it on and it did nothing. but its not only the cable thats not working. I used the optical out on my PS2 and tried that but that didnt work either so i dont know if this converter thing doesnt work or what it could be.

Thanks for the quick replys BTW

That is very interesting (although not to you I'm sure as you're probably pretty frustrated by now).

As far as I know, satellite is always all digital so the Dolby On setting *should* mean if the broadcast is any flavor of DD send it as is (same as 'bitstream' for a dvd player) and if Off send it as PCM which is still digital.

In that link to the Yamaha system that markw posted there is a tab that says 'downloads' but you need to register with Yamaha to dowload the manual. If you could get that manual, I'd like to see what it says about configuring the digital input. It shouldn't be this hard!

yea i didnt think it was going to be this hard. if u want to look at the manual its easy to d/l, u just fill out a few questions. u dont need a product key or ne thing. ide upload it but i dont know how. it doesnt really say much about the digital input except about turning off PCM which goes off on the cable box when i switch it to DD.

and its more frusturating then interesting....

i reread everything again and it says to switch the receiver to digital mode before turning on the other devices. im going to try this when i wake up ( i work 3rd shift) so im going to bed now, i dont feel like doing this now thatim tired.

do u think this could really be the problem?

so i just tried waiting for the receiver to go to digital mode before turning on either the cable box or the ps2, and it was the same result...nothing.

im going to email the person i bought it from.that could be the only thing i could think of. because when the things r on the optical wire has a red light on the end....that means its sending right? so it must be something inside the converter.

has ne one ever used one of these converters before?

I would think a red light means no signal and it would probably turn green when it is receiving a signal, but check the instructions that came with it.

You know that the digital input works if you use a dvd player and it's likely that the converter works too, so that leaves the satellite receiver. You said it has an option for Dolby Digital On/Off but changing it has no effect.

So...how is the satellite dish/antenna/whatever connected to the box you describe as an HD receiver? Satellite should be all digital but it sounds like the HD receiver will not output digital regardless of the setting. To me that implies that what was input was analog because cable boxes and receivers generally won't convert an analog input to digital and output it over a digital output.

i dont really understand the last sentence that u said but the ps2 also has a red light coming out of it when its turned on and nothing when its off. thats y i think its the converter just because neither of them work. if only the cable box didnt work then i would assume it would be that.

so ru sure that the optical light is green when its sending something and not red?
