Presence or Rear Surrounds?

At this point, I do not have enough speakers to run both options. For those of you that have Yammy receivers, will I get a more dynamic HT experieince utilizing presence speakers if the front, or rear surrounds?

Unless you have the new RX-V11, you can't run both options. (I'm not certain you can with it, either, btw.) It's an either/or setup with old Yammies such as our RX-V2500. We use rears, mostly because of our larger room. It's very satisfying for us, whereas the presence speakers wouldn't add as much, simply because of room layout.

You might want to try it both ways with temporary setups and see which you prefer.

I've read a magazine review where the author had a Yamaha receiver and used presence speakers. He swears that he will never go back. I personally don't believe in all those DSPs. Mind you I have never tried it either.

Rear surrounds are not critical for movies (at the moment) since there is not much out that offers a 7.1 recording.

Try both for a while and come up with your own decision. I know it is a pain and time consuming. Maybe one day I will try it myself.

if it were up to me, I would go with rear surrounds instead of front prescence.

It kind of depends on your room layout. If you have 5 to 10 feet of room behind where you are seated, then I'd go for the rears. If you are seated right at the back wall, then you may as well set them up as front presence.

If all things are equal, I prefer them as rears.

How you like them is all up to you.

yeah, but i was hoping the upcoming 1800, 2800 would have this feature, that would sure help in beating the other receiver companies in features.

I simply can't afford the flagship yamahas, or at least I'm not willing to pay for them.

some people say that while the "sound" is non directional, the "pressure" isn't.

my reason for wanting stereo subs is upping the crossover to 100-120hz to:
-further relieve the mains of bass
-someone told me that some of the kick in the chest effect comes from 100hz, therefore I would want a more capable sub to produce that frequency.

I remember reading that bass can still be localized below frequencies that are omnidirectional (i.e. a little lower than ~120Hz), because of the sonic shadow that the head creates. Now, if I could remember where I read that...

Stereo subs could also allow, if nothing else, for each subwoofer channel to have its own phase, level, and EQ.

Ignore that, the head can not create a shadow at such low frequencies (it can at much higher frequencies).
I'm not sure what I was thinking.

Although, after doing some quick searching, it would appear that at least left/right localization can occur for frequencies below 120Hz... though I am having a very hard time trying to find out why.
