Preamp on Record Player question

Hello All,

Very basic question on record players.

Is there a benefit if a record player contained a preamp if I am using the player with an audio receiver?

I never used a player and recently acquired a large collection of records from our local library. I will be purchasing a basic player (Marantz TT42 or TT42P) within a few days.

Thank you for your responses,
Joseph.

You can use your receiver if it has dedicated phono inputs.

If your receiver lacks dedicated phono inputs, you'll either need a table with the phono pre-amp built in, or a stand alone phono preamp to insert between the tt and your receiver.

Yamaha Avantage RX 1060 - It does have dedicated phono inputs. I figured that I could just use these inputs, but did not know if having a preamp on the record plater would be an advantage or useless.

Since you have one in the avr I'd skip the Marantz TT42P you're considering...

be careful, even if a receiver has phono 'inputs' that does not always mean it has phono pre-amp.

Here's the phono input spec from the 1060 manual
• Input Sensitivity / Input Impedance
PHONO (1 kHz, 100 W/8 Ω) .............................................3.5 mV/47 kΩ
