is happens 'just before' it becomes a Pro.... pre/pro :p

(Pre)amp
(Pro)cessor

just simply means the unit is both the preamp and processor in one device.

as far as hearing your speakers... they may make a sound without being hooked up to something but it may not be the sounds you want. haha

Do a web search on 'how speakers work' to understand how these things work. Or better yet... go to BestBuy and ask the gurus there to explain how it all works... they'll love that!

You won't be able to hear the Studios at all with just a pre/pro, you will also have to buy an amp. AVRs make wonderful pre/pro now and get get all the bells and whistles that go along with them. An AVR drives my 100's just fine but I use an outboard amp anyway.

How long do you think these Denon receivers of ours last?

I would be really upset and never buy another receiver if they only last 5 years of less.

With this sick disease we have, I am certain they will last a lot longer than we keep them.

My record to date was with a Yamaha. Got it in 1991, ran the heck out of it for years, in 2003 it became my garage AVR in the Texas heat for 2 years, then I gave it to the kid down the block and it is still going strong.
