"Power Save"...On or Off?

I've been keeping my Sony SXRD rear pro's "Power Save" to OFF since I've owned it, but I experimented with switching it to ON last night for the first time, and I can't really see any discernable difference in the image; what should this be on?

It seemed to make the screen a bit less "bright" and I was going for making the light output around the edges of the screen during dark film sequences a bit more muted, but is this what Power Save is for?

Power save set to off. On will effect your picture settings.

yep, on my sets, anyway. it keeps more of the internals energized, so the set turns on faster.

idk if it effects set "on" performance.

Can you explain this with a bit more detail? The picture settings will be affected how?

I'll return it to OFF, as I was running it since I have the set, but I just wanted to understand what you're explaining here about it affecting the picture output...

Power save will very from each tech but with the rpg displays, it will reduce brightness levels and as the bulb gets older the output will be effective.

No color/Dark picture/Color.....if you set the Power Saving Mode
is not correct/The picture is....On, it will enhance the black level
too bright............................(see page 48)

That is not the manual to my model -- I have a KDS-50A2020 SXRD.

But does Power Save do the same thing on MY set?

yea,i feel so. the power save do the same way as your set does.
The theory behind was the same,u might need to have a look of your own TV setting and method. try on it

I appreciate you digging up my manual online; every time I have attempted to do that, the link was always corrupt or I simply couldn't get it onscreen.

May I ask -- and I am seriously just asking out of lack of knowledge on this subject -- why do you feel, based on what they're saying in the manual, that the POWER SAVE should be OFF?

Just wanted to know if you could explain this a bit further...

On the topic of the A2020's manual, it suggests that "Standard" picture mode is "recommended for home entertainment" but almost every single SXRD owner on the planet uses "Custom" mode rather than Standard; I attempted to recalibrate my display last night because we recently moved into a new house and the seating distance is now different from the previous setup, and I was tempted to begin calibrating in Custom instead of my usual Standard -- however, I just automatically came back, as I always do, to Standard mode.

I'm thinking now that perhaps, maybe, I should ignore what the manual suggests for using "Standard" for "home entertainment" purposes and just calibrate in Custom because it allows for turning off the edge enhancement, etc. What are your thoughts on this?

You don't run it at 50 to save the bulb and to save electricity. While talking about lights ..try the new Day-Glo CFL awesome whiteness. Why buy a projection TV system and run the bulb at a dim setting ? You pay for a great display; it doesn't make sense not to display it as it was meant, in the best "light"

I have left the settings to Power Saving Low, because in my room isn't to much light so i find it more relaxing.

Don't affect contrast, color, etc. The only thing that is affected is backlight illumination of panel.

You have an LCD TV which is totally different from what the OP was asking and the type of TV he has, an SXRD projection bulb type TV.

Okay...I have made the changes you suggested above -- that is, switching to POWER SAVE: OFF and recalibrating my set in CUSTOM -- and here is what I found:

Using three different calibration discs, including the Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark Blu-ray, the settings in CUSTOM were as follows:

Picture Mode: Custom
Iris: Auto 1
Contrast: 80 (out of "100")
Brightness: 54 (out of "100")
Color: 42 (out of "100")
Hue (Tint): 0 (mid point)
Color Temp: WARM2
Sharpness: 25 (out of "100")
Noise Reduction: Low (out of "Low," "Medium" and "High")

ADVANCED SETTINGS (only available in CUSTOM):

All OFF except for DETAIL ENHANCER, which I kept to HIGH for supposedly good "pop" for HD material like Blu-ray...

Now, with these new settings, I ran the non-anamorphic DVD of Armageddon last night (in anticipation of the upcoming Blu-ray release) and while it looked fantastic, actually, upscaled on my OPPO Blu-ray player, there were some things that were still off to me, and I don't understand why...

The main problem was that EVEN USING WARM2 AS A COLOR TEMP, the image was still shadowed by a cool/blue tone/hue which I couldn't stand or get rid of in STANDARD mode. I'm thinking some White Balance adjustments can fix this, but would you be able to suggest which Blue Gain/Bias settings would allow me to dial some of the "coolness" of the image out?

Another big issue I had with Custom was the fact that while there seemed to be less edge enhancement and noise in that way (I left "Edge Enhancer" OFF in the Advanced menu, which isn't available to do in Standard mode) when watching Armageddon, the image itself, as a whole, really didn't look THAT much better in Custom as I was expecting it to. If there's still blue push to the image, and it doesn't look increasingly, noticeably better than Standard did, what is the purpose of leaving it in Custom?

turn off the detail enhancer... what is your work flow for these settings, also the adjustments I noted are only meant to help correct the issues you are having.

These settings I provided were made with THREE different calibration discs, not just "guessed" on my behalf; for example, you say to put BRIGHTNESS on "50" but that would cause HORRENDOUS black crush on my set -- 50 isn't correct at all according to the Pluge Pattern tests.
