Power issue with HTR-5790--Immediate entry to standby mode

I started having some strage behavior from my HTR-5790 this morning. It will power up as normal, but will flip to Standby Mode just after sound starts coming from the speakers (From radio Tuner). The manual suggests to check speaker connections (OK), or to unplug and then power on whcih does not help. I also checked power cord and I know Impedence is set correctly. I found a post form a user last march that indicated similar behavior (he bought the unit used), but nothing else. Does anyone know if the unit is toast or if there is a simple fix?

thanks,

Mike

Make sure the voltage adjustment has not been moved. Also try disconnecting all other cables and interconnects from the receiver then power it on.

Make sure you leave the speaker connected :) .

What is that supposed to mean? In order to determine if his receiver is faulty he needs to disconnect everything from it.

Hehe
I have a tube amp , it can not be power on with out the speakers being connected :) . Just making sure he doesnt blow it :) .
He has to make sure , they are connected properly ( red to red and black to black , with no wires hanging out and touching each other ) . then power it on .

No luck

I disconnected everything, plugged power back in and got the same result. I looked for a voltage setting and this model does not seem to have one.

Did you recheck your speaker wires ? Make sure they are connected properly . if they are not your amp section might shut down .

Your receiver is faulty more than likely if it does this with nothing plugged into it. I would try plugging another device into the outlet such as a tv and see if it is an electrical problem.

Sorry for your luck.:(

It shuts down with nothing, not even speakers plugged into it. That is unless I missunderstood his last post.:)

Start to rehook it and only run your front speakers . Run only basics and see if it shuts down again. Make sure you speaker wire is not touching each other .

I think you may not understand.:) He has no wires or cables connected to the receiver other than the supplied power cable and it is still doing the exact same thing. If it is shuting down with no wires or cables connected what so ever it has a problem that is beyond your typical speaker wire shorting or a fuse blowout. It is either in need of repair or the AC line voltage is not right.

Unfortunetly that is what seems to be the case.:(

I do not like it when these things happen to me so I feel your pain Mike, it is really upsetting to have a nice piece of equipment foul up on you. I have the next year's model from yours it only has but a few rather pointless features on it that your receiver lacks, such as pure direct mode that I never use. It is a nice receiver I hope the repair doesn't cost you to much.

Good luck Mike.:)

It depends on who you are if it is a throw-away.:) If my AVR went bad I would try to repair it because that would be cheaper than replacing it with a equvilent model. He is probably best off getting it serviced. If it was a DVD player I would say toss it, or if it was an entry level receiver I might say toss it. But not a $800 receiver!

Well, well, the plot thickens

Thanks for the input. Tried an alternate outlet on a different circuit......and no power off. Works fine. Which points to something on the original outlet or its power circuit. Strange thing is that the HDTV and Cable box are working just fine. No odd behavior at all.

I tried two distinct scenarios on the "bad" outlet. First is with the receiver plugged intio into a good commercial grade Panamax surge protector (where it has run happily for more than a year). Second, with nothing else on the electrical circuit powered up, plugged the receiver into the wall outlet directly. Both of these caused the power-on/quick power off. Then moved to another outlet in the house, worked fine. Now, when I go BACK to the original outlet, powers up with no issue. Thoughts on what I should be looking at before I hook everything back up?

Well first I would try connecting a stereo pair of speakers and one source such as a CD player to test it at the outlet that you had moved the receiver to test it. Then try the same test again at the questionable outlet.

This may be good news or bad news, hopefully you aren't having bad electric problems. I would guess the receiver is more sensitive to variable currents than your other electronic devices. None the less if the problem persists you should contact an electrician to diagnose your house wiring. You don't want a house fire.:D
