i also have a set of polk's, and have found that they are a very sweet sounding speaker for a specific type of music like jazz or classical.but seem to have alot of trouble with hard rock like nickelback, metallica, slayer, megadeath to name a few.this is just what i have noticed with swapping different equipment in and out of my system.try setting up a different set of speakers or try listening to a different style of music thru your polks to see if it has the same effect that nickelback does.

The problem is that you're all right lol.

1. I really do need an upgrade cuz I don't have preouts
2. My speakers act better with jazz and classical (but still goes harsh at high SPL)
3. My speakers are all 8ohm
4. My room has a weird shape but is approximately 23x14x7.5 = 2415
5. Stereo (L/R) speaker wires are both 6' long and are gauge 12

6. Finally, have a look at my signature. You guys are Yammie/Denon fans. I'm not. Cuz they don't deliver "true sound" in music reproduction. I like NAD but if I want to go 7.1 (think future here), I have to buy the T773 which is 2000$.

Conclusion. I Think I should stick with my gear for movies and then save some money for a music system. Do you know speakers who would sound great with metal music? (Nickelback, metallica, etc.) Energy?

If you guys have more ideas don't hesitate; I come here 1-2 times a day to see you! :p

if you really want to upgrade the "sound quality" get a receiver that has pre-outs and get a decent amp ... that way, you are not limited in your speaker choices. (for example going up the RTi line or getting full towers)

Yamaha and Denon

There is a huge performance difference between your low end Yamaha and the mid-fi models from Yamaha and Denon. For about 1k, the Yamaha RX-V2600 or Denon 3806 will deliver plenty of power into 7 channels and are packed with features like HDMI. Just read the reviews for scientific measurements of the pre-amp section.

If you prefer music quality over features, also take a look at the new Ultralight pre-pro/amp combo from AV123.com for $1k. The UL amp is stable into 4 ohms at over 200 Watts / channel.

hey mouettus, i own a set of cerwin vega d-8 speakers.15" 3 way, they are a older model that i have had re-coned.you can pick these speakers up cheap these days. let me tell you i listen to alot of heavy/thrash type of metal and the speakers perform solid.they pound your chest.you may want to think about getting a set of klipsh or cerwins or something of similar design. by far kick my polks for that style of music.

I am not one of those Yamaha, Denon fan but I think I have auditioned enough receivers and amplifiers in recent years to know that receivers such as NADT773, ARCAM300, Harman Kardon, Denon & Yamaha's mid price models should sound pretty much the same. Subjectively, the Arcam AVR300, for some reason did sound a little more musical to me. I only heard it through some Energy Veritas speakers. I probably could not pick it out in any sort of blind listening test though.
