Power Conditioners, Hype?

Ok, you guys seem to be the experts, Ive got a couple of questions about my new system. (It's really hard to trust 20 year old salesmen these days)

I puchased last weekend from Good Guys:

SPEAKERS- Klipsch RF-5, RC-7, RS-35, RW-12
RECEIVER- YAMAHA RX-V2500
POWER CONDITIONER- MONSTER MPHFS2600

1. My new house came "pre-wired" for surround, hence, I've got spots in the ceiling right above the sofa on the back wall that I wnated to hang the RS-35's pointed straight down. Is that stupid for those speakers? I can run new wires and put them on the back wall, just wondering....

2. The salesman tells me that these power things form Monster are "must have" items. He says "with my system, it would be stongly advised to protect my amp" Don't receivers have fuses that will prevent a power surge from killing them? Is this just hype?

Any help would be much appreciated. I'm picking up everything on Firday and installing over the weekend. I've been "out of the loop" for some time. I'm VERY excited, I have always wanted a Klipsch system..Finally....

Thanks!

It is true that you should have a power conditioner, if your electrical current fluctuates (which it does). Monster makes a good product, but salesmen are trained to hype up Monster. I would have picked out a Furman or Tripp Lite power conditioner. I find that they have better parts then the monster. Furman has just come out with a new line of power conditioners for home theater as well as Tripp Lite. Do some research (look at the Tripp Lite LCR-2400 and the Furman AR-1215) and then decide what you want to do. If you are happy with the $$$ you spent on the Monster then keep it. Either way it is cheep protection (in the long run) for your equipment. Hope that helps :D

We are looking to take a better (read: measurements) look at power conditioning, but have yet to get everyone to agree to send us review units.

I have to agree with everyone else... Surge supression is just one aspect of what is going on. Power conditioning is another aspect as well. You get both and that just goes to increase the bottom line of performance for your system. You didn't get 'had' by being steered towards a conditioner, and you didn't get a piece of junk unit like a power strip from Home Depot. You likely paid a little more than you needed to, but I've had a 2500 for years and have liked it and have a HTS7000 that is going into my new setup.

I wonder why that is :D

Maybe you are too effective of an influence in wiping out audio BS??? :p
