I have a line a a reasonably priced Monster Power Conditioner, but I am not sure whether I need to go that far or just settle for a surge bar. Any thoughts?

Depends on the power quality in your area. My old house was in country and got lots of mini brown outs so I got one. It had a read out so you could see what it was actually coming in and that made me feel even better about buying it.
Whatever you get make sure you can run your antenna/cable through it.

I agree. If you live in an area with lots of brownouts it's not a bad idea but unnecessary except as a fancy surge suppressor for most places.

I would cross the Monster off the list and consider something like the APC P8V. That's what I use and I'm very happy with it.

Input frequency: 50/60 Hz ± 5Hz (auto sensing)
Input connections: 8 NEMA 5-15P
Maximum line current per phase: 15A
Cord length: 6ft.
Surge energy rating: 2690 Joules
eP Joule Rating: 3400
EMI/RFI noise rejection (100kHz to 10MHz): 70dB
Peak current normal mode: 20kAmps
Peak current common mode: 40kAmps

Having one with a 'Battery Back' up is a BIG help to keep things running if the power goes out. It's a GREAT help for Rear Projection TVs that need that cool down cycle like ours. We have a BELKIN. It was on sale at Amazon for 139.00 inc. shipping. It retails for 399.00

Personally, I think power conditioners are full of audiophile BS (like disciplined electrons, etc) but a surge protector with some sort of insurance is a good idea if it pays off. If you go the rest of your life and never get hit by lightning, it will be a waste, but if you experience what happened to me (lost a PC, high quality stereo preamp and power amp, DVD player, surround receiver and TV in one strike) you will appreciate a payout. I got money from the surge protector company as well as my homeowners insurance. It didn't replace all of it, but it decreased the pain.

You are the only person I have ever heard of having made a claim on a surge protector. Can you tell us a bit about how that worked? How did you prove your claim to the surge protector company? Did your home owners or the surge company deduct the payout from the other. You say all was not covered - is this because of your deductible? and/or because the insurance level from the surge protector was lower than your gear's value? or is there some fine print that we, who don't read fine print on everything we buy, find out about after the fact?

Thanks!
