my work desktop is full of shortcuts - post it widgets - and uses one of the defaut windows wallpapers (sometimes i even use a plain gray wallpaper)

my home desktop has a pic of my kid - but still with a million shortcuts and folders

i'm totally 2001.

how did you get the shut down button on the desktop?
I have one on my taskbar and one on my desktop.

The desktop one shuts down in 30 minutes, in case I am doing a defrag or something and want to let it finish. To make that one, right click on the desktop and choose new shortcut. In the target box, put

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 1800

The 1800 is 1800 seconds, which is 30 minutes. You can put anything you want there instead. The -f forces all programs to end even if they don't want to, and you can leave that off if you don't want it.

You can choose the icon by clicking the change icon button and finding the shutdown icon.

I apparently revealed the extent of my geekyness by not just posting my desktop picture.
