Its at least 6 years old and I just don't have the know-how/time to try and repair it. I will talk with the repair shop to see if they would give me some kind of credit (they did tell me the speaker was fine before I spent $100 on a new switch!). If I go new whats a good replacement for the Mirage 10"??
Thanks

Look into the SVS subs. People here swear by them.

Most spider separations occur at the critical cone neck-voice coil former-spider joint (or three way joint) and not at the spider to basket joint. However, I would not rule it out in this case as it (the problem) does not occur until higher motion levels.

Mulester7,

Most subwoofer "bottoming" is usually the three way joint making contact with the top plate. Not the former making contact with the back plate. Though that can occur depending upon the design of the speaker.
.....thank you, Annunaki....I bow to your and Mac's expertise....

Mulester7,

Those words are not neccessary. A thanks is more than enough.

MacManNM,

I have found that when the spider separates from the basket it usually does so in only a small area (roughly 1/3rd of the entire spider). Not completely torn from the basket. Though it is plausible in extreme cases. However, when it partially, separates the cone, coil and former become more and more non-linear as the cone, coil and former move farther out.

Either way, this situation does sound like a mechanical failure at some point.

I wasted my poor father's RTR towers in the early 80's. Ripped everything apart, spiders both ways. Then we replaced all the drivers, and I did it again. I was really pounding them. I was a bad young man. It's really amazing how much punishment drivers can take. Back then It was somewhere around $600 damage. I'm lucky to be alive after that one.

I will look into the SVS. Any suggestion on models and cost and where you can get them? Thanks

I quess you live in a internet world where troubleshooting and labor are free. $95 for labor and parts seems very resonable. Good techs costs good money. Can you troubleshoot and find bad caps, bad resisters , bad ICS for twenty bucks a hour I do not think so. I hope you are not using that avr-3805 as a preamp. Do your self a favor and audition a PRE-Pro and your system may have potental..
