How about the SR605? other than that the 661, though it's probably not worth a lot more than the 659. Depends on what you're looking for. Do you have HDMI requirements?

661 HDMI straight thru no up conversion
659 NO HDMI but better amplifier section than 661

661 HDMI 1.2 I have seen a lot of reports from owners on other forums that they are having Handshake problems with HDMI mostly with set top boxes (like Direct TV & scientific atlanta cable box with HDMI output)

I opted for the 659 after a evaluation of the 659 & 661 slight sonic nudge to the 659 driving lower impedence speakers at reference levels. (not using HDMI on either AVR)

You can get the 659 for $300.00 and the 661 for $ 350.00 on line. HDMI was not important to me at this time or in the near future as cureently I do not have a BR player. and can run HDMI straight to my Samaung LCD and Optical audio to my 659.

I was also looking at the RX-V861 with HDMI switching and upconverting plus a more robust amplifier than the 661. Downside is that it runs around double the cost of the 661/659.

those are the points i was noticing between the yamaha's. is there a real benefit to the HDMI pass if your monitor has HDMI ?

Yamaha Receivers

The HDMI on the Yamaha RX-V661 also allows for audio processing which can be important if you plan to add BluRay or HD-DVD as a source and want to take advantage of the new audio formats. For other sources, the HDMI switching is just a convenience.

I have had good results with my Yamaha HTR-5860 (similar to RX-V659) which I am currently using as a pre-pro with an Emotiva LPA-1 amp. You get a lot of features in this price range ($3-400) and the pre-amp outputs allow you to upgrade to an amp in the future.

i noticed the 661 lacks "DTS-ES Discrete 6.1"
important ?

looking at other HDMI unit like the onkyo tx-SR605 and pio 1016tx

First hand for me, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD through the 661 via HDMI only
= no handshake issues whatsoever. I also have a Samsung upconverting DVD player connected via HDMI only with no issues.

I think it's a great unit and have no problems. I am unfamiliar with the others you mentioned.

The pioneer has no audio via HDMI, so I'd scratch that.

The 605 seems nice, but read the massive thread regarding popping over at AVS forums before you buy. No such issues reported with the Yami's.

It's an HD cable box with DVR. It is one of the things the other poster mentioned may have HDMI issues. I was telling you that I have none.

The Yamaha has analog pre-outs. (for the future option of a external power amp)
I don't believe the Onkyo has them.
None of the receivers are under powered in any way but IMO the presence of them gives the 6xx series from Yamaha the upper hand over comparable Onkyo offerings.

The 661 will have plenty of power for you. I’ve been using one for a few weeks now driving my 4 ohm speakers while waiting for my Marantz 8001 to be repaired. I can’t pin the volume without it tripping out on me, but it definitely plays louder than I can stand. I did some experimenting when I initially hooked the 661 up. I was able to reach sustained db’s of 95 with peaks up to 105 db at 12’ away from my mains. It would play louder, but I could start to detect some clipping above 95, so I backed it down.

The 661 is really a remarkable little receiver considering what it can be bought for. It does so many things right that other high end receivers don’t do at all. It’s a great bargain and you won’t be sorry you bought it, which is not something that I can say for most of the other stuff I’ve wasted money on. The one little quirk I don’t care for, is Yamaha decided to make this receiver default to an “auto” extended surround mode whenever you turn the unit off. When you turn it back on and want PLIIx enabled for 5.1 sources, you have to manually enable it. There is a discrete IR command for this, but you won’t find it on the remote. You will need a programmable remote.
