polk upgrade or not

I just purchased an Onkyo nr807 and was thinking of upgrading my speakers. I currently have Polk Rt1000i fronts, CS350ls center, and RT f/x surrounds and was thinking of upgrading to Polk Monitor 60 fronts, CS2 center and monitor 30 rears and heights for the fronts. Or am I better off matching my center and surround to the towers I already have? Thanks Greg

It is my opinion that going from the speakers you have to the Monitor 60 is a step backwards.

ls f/x crossover

I think that I need a crossover for one of the surrounds. Would anyone happen to know where I could get one. I tested all the speakers with a 9 volt battery they all squawked however when I hook-up the speaker to the receiver I get nothing. Otherwise would anyone have any other ideas? Would it be possible to have someone rebuild my crossover or should I just try to get another surround speaker or set? Also would it make enough of a difference to bi wire the fronts in place of running a height set of speakers? Oh by the way I have a sub-woofer just not a very good one a Sony. But I would like to upgrade that as well. I have an very odd shaped living room though and all said and done it's over 2500 sq ft. Thanks Greg

I don't know what you mean by a height set of speakers, but you wont get any benefit by biwiring your speaker.

To get this straight, you have your reciever set so that it knows you are using surrounds, however only one of the surround speakers works?

Have you switched speakers? How do you know you don't have a dead channel on your receiver? If the woofer moves in and out on the battery test, the speaker will not be dead, it is not receiving a signal. If the other surround is working and you don't have a wiring short, then your receiver is faulty and needs to be returned.

Check wiring first.

Bi-wiring is bogus and a waste of time.

I agree with Quickley17, you're definitely taking a step backward if you switch out to the current Polk Monitor series. If you want to stay with Polk, and with the gear you mentioned the RTiA series may be your ticket, it's a small improvement as it is the same series with 3-4 generations of upgrades.

Surrounds

I just got the receiver from Audioholics no less, so anyway I've tried the speaker at different channels of the receiver so I know for sure it isn't the amplifier It has to be in the speaker itself somewhere, I've tried the 9v battery thing to each speaker and they all made noise. So I'm left to assume that it would be in the crossover? Or am I wrong? I am also looking for a CS400i center if anyone would have a lead on one of those? I would be interested in trading my 350ls plus cash if anyone has some vintage Ls series tower that they would like a center for. I live in Wisconsin if that helps anyone out and thanks for all the help Greg:rolleyes:

Not enough information.

1). Take off the speaker grill, connect and disconnect the battery. Does the woofer of that speaker fly to and fro If it does, it is NOT the speaker. If the woofer cone does not fly in and out on make and break with the battery, then either the woofer is burnt out, or there is something wrong with the crossover.

2). Did you use the same speaker wire when you connected the speaker to the different channels? If the answer is yes, use a different wire.

3). Do speakers you know work, work on the dead channel. If so it is not the receiver and it has to be a wiring issue if the speaker checks OK on the battery test.

Surrounds 2

Alright when I connect the battery to the input of the speaker I get nothing. When I pull all the drivers out of the enclosure I can get them all to move and make noise. I disconnected it from my rear speaker wires and connected it to my front as they are easier to get to and I still got nothing. I will try hooking up a different speaker to the surround wire and see what I get but I really think that I has to be the crossover.

It is the crossover or a bad or lifted connection.

Now you have the woofers out, look to see if a wire has come off the input terminal. Take out the speaker terminals if you have to. Now make sure the no connection has come off the crossover.

If connections are spades rather then soldered joints, then clean all connection carefully as spade connectors often oxidize and won't pass a signal.

The only component failure that would cause what you describe would be the inductor in series with the choke. That would be a most unusual failure, especially given that it is a surround speaker. I strongly suspect a bad connection in the speaker someplace.

If you can't sort it out and since you live in Wisconsin, and I'm in Minnesota you are welcome to ship the speaker to me and I will have it sorted for you fast.
