Does anyone have any suggestions for the side surrounds for the 7.1 system? Remember: narrow room and probably 24" from wall to armrest of the HT chairs, so large wall-mounted speakers won't work. Anyone have suggestions on decent in-walls? I know the con of in-walls regarding the lack of proper cabinet, but we work with what we've got.

The screen and projector have not been purchased yet, but due to the space limitations of the roof line, it will likely only be a 96" electric drop down screen. I don't know that using the 3 of the DT centers would really be necessary, and I don't think needing to have the behind the screen is that important either. But it is an interesting idea.

Mazer, how much power would those rockets need to run?!! Those towers look like a power-hungry beast, lol. I suppose just pre-amping the mains to a dedicated amp for them isn't too far out there. They are relatively efficient though at 91.5db. That setup may be possible especially with the dipole/bipole surrounds being narrower.

There are plenty of cost effective ways to power the Rockets.

I think the rockets are a good speaker to check out......I have only heard the 850 but it was paired with a Sunfire sub which sounded killer....and they are pretty efficient as well.

Has anyone heard these in person or have an opinion on them? I am helping my father put together an HT system in the new house they just built. The house has a dedicated media room which is about 23Lx11Wx10H. Since the room is narrow, we are planning 3 rows of 2 HT chairs. Okay, so with the particulars of the room out of the way, what recommendations are there for such a narrow room?

I can't find anywhere to demo the Polks in Tulsa, OK. Circuit City doesn't sell the RTi and above lines, and their staff are incompetant teenagers to boot. In addition, there isn't a lot of room between the walls and the HT chairs to pass through, so would in-wall speakers for the side channels be a horrible compromise? Any other brands that would just blow the Polks away for the same price range (about 1K for the front pair).

The rear two channels/sub can be any size and all speakers will likely be pushed by a Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH receiver with 130Wx7. I have searched the site a bunch to try to find answers, but no one has much input on these.
It's unfortunate that you can't get a decent demo prior to a purchase of that magnitude. I think the RTiA is a much better speaker than it has been historically and the upate was long overdue. Unfortunately for this thread.....CC only sells the TSi and Monitor lines.

The RTiA low end is tight and rolls pretty smoothly, midrange is solid but not overly warm, the high end is clear but can glare if overdriven. That's a critical view of the speaker, that most folks don't even notice.

I agree with the panel suggestions since the actual room gets forgotten, for the most part, in new installs. That should tame alot of common issues.

The in-wall idea isn't crazy and I've heard a bunch of well done mixes between traditional and in-wall/ceiling. I want to go 100% in-wall at some point as I'm tired of wal warts and moving things around.

There are other solid suggestions in this thread and ultimately, it's up to you. I like to hear things before I buy them but sometimes you take the leap of faith based on what you find in your travels. I bought Magnepan MMG, sight unseen, and have become a devotee of planars ever since. Be careful, you may get injured :)

I'm sure that you'll make an informed choice, regardless of what it is in the end.

I apreciate the honest input. I have directed my father to a few places to read up on the rockets, polks, and a few others. I am impressed by the apparent quality from the reviews (professional and otherwise) of the Rockets. I'm not normally one to purchase something like this without hearing it in person first, but I guess all we have to lose is return shipping if we hate them that much. I think 130W per channel is enough to drive either at least to start with, and the pioneer txh-92 has pre-outs to upgrade to a monoblock later if need be.

Lol, on a side note, I have a new F-150 with their Audiophile sound system. . . Ford's idea of audiophile and mine must be way different but oh well!

One more reason to possibly give them a chance. I think we would go ahead with a SVS PB-10 or 12 sub instead of the av123 unit, but I don't think that would ruffle anyone's feathers.

Those SVS subs are great subs. But I still would opt for the AV123 sub over those two models.

ANy particular reason you would use that subwoofer? I realize it's a 15" as opposed to a 10/12".

Output and Headroom

Driver size is only one part of a subwoofer. Enclosure design, crossover, amp all play a part together.

Try Definitive Technology

The PO Box for Wild West is in Edmond, OK, which is only an hour and a half away. But I couldn't realy find locations of any physical stores unless I was missing something.

I realize it will be up to his personal preference, but it would be nice to have some starting points, and I honestly had a hard time zoning in on the speakers full sound when listening to them in the middle of a crowded store with people talking and demoing other speakers at the same time. The downside is, my father isn't the type of person to have anyone come in and do an in-home demo of speakers.

This room will primarily be used for movies and the occassional concert DVD (aka chicago, styx, eagles, etc). I know that he isn't looking for a whole stack of electronics to be able to run this thing. The projector, receiver, and blu-ray player will likely be the only thing in the air conditioned equipment room.
Definitive technology should sound great in a room that size and you can find some great deals.
