Political Threads Part Deux

Alright people, time for a little give and take.

Obviously people here have a difference in political perspectives. This has resulted in some pretty spectacular dumpster fires that are next to impossible to moderate, since everyone insists on being cruel to their political rivals (I’m not immune in the face of willful ignorance).

IMHO, these threads have been a poison to the forums over time; a lot of knowledgeable people have been banned or simply left due to the toxic nature of these conversations.

Can we start doing better? We’re an A/V website, not HuffPo, Breitbart, etc. Can’t we pretend to get along for 5 minutes just out of shared love for a hobby? I mean, I may not think much of Trump or Elon, but if they used this site to help build a rocking Atmos rig in the White House, that’d still be pretty cool in my book.

My 2 cents. Discuss.

I'll try and stick to links etc instead of personal attacks on members.

The opinions I see in The Steam Vent are ones that I don't get on FB or other social media, particularly from my American neighbours. It's important to me to get the American perspective on these matters. There are some quite knowledgeable members in the forums. The personal attacks should end, though. There is some personal risk to Gene, however, as anyone selecting "New" posts will see a lot of political discourse in an audio forum. I hope it doesn't have a negative impact on the traffic or website reputation.

Are you concerned about statements people post that are cruel to public figures? I've always thought public figures are fair game for flaming (provided the person in question is a public figure by choice, victims of crime might be an example of an exception)

I try to avoid disparaging other people who post here, but I'm surely not perfect.

To my mind, a gray area is posting something like "Anyone who supports X is an idiot!" when it's pretty clear other members support X.

There is a tendency to escalate. If nothing else, we're all human (other than the bots that invade from time to time)

Flaming public officials isn’t an issue. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you resort to ad hominem attacks, which is my concern here.
