Ploedouris "Conan". Too much, or too little bass?

So for years I've had the Poledouris score to the movie Conan the Barbarian, and recently I ordered the Telarc 'Great fantasy Adventure' album which has a rendition of Conan's opening Anvil of Crom by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.:)

Listening to these two recordings reveal many differences: Kunzels "percussion" section seems to include a guy whacking on a piece of metal with a hammer, Poledouris's rendition has a much more robust horn/brass section, et cetera.
The big difference, however, is in the bass department. Kunzel's work has big, loud, deep drums that shake my couch with every note. The Poledouris original score doesn't seem to have any deep bass at all. Even with the volume set much higher, I cannot even come close to recreating the bass of the Telarc recording. Now my older CD just sounds weak in comparison (which is terrible because its my favorite symphonic work).:(

Now for my question.

Is the Telarc album of Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops recorded with artificially high levels of bass, or is the Poledouris and Santa Cecilia symphony recorded with very thin bass?
