Greetings,

I am new to high end AV hardware. I finally got the cash together to put together my home theatre. The TV is the Sony KBL-46XBR5 LCD tv. and i have a 360, PS3 and other consoles hooked up. So I need to think about power conditioning/protection. I will admit right now that I am out of my league, so can anyone help with advice? For example, what is the difference between these two models?

APC AV J10BLK Home Theater 1000VA Battery Backup, Power Filter and Power Conditioner (BLACK)

APC J15 AV 1.5kVA Power Conditioner with Battery Backup 120V

The J10 is less expensive, but what am I losing out on? And what is the difference between 1000VA and 1500VA? I am not afraid to spend money if its really going to be a wise investment, but I just do not know what the features really mean. I don't really care how long the battery will power my hardware, i only want battery included for the boost and trip feature, that I assume will even out current by either taking out or adding in power to keep the feed even.

Thanks!

You need to add up your power loads. The J15 will supply 1KVA, the J10 50% more at 1.5 KVA. Now add up the total power draw and see how big a unit you need. I would make sure you pick a back up UPS from the APC smart UPS series.

I thought...

Dont those units already provide battery backup? Also, and this may be a stupid question, how do I add up my equipment to see what number I need in terms of VA? And while I am revealing how little i know, do units like those above provide any protection from a non-grounded (2 prong) outlet? or are they only good when used with a grounded 3 prong outlet?

Watts are volts X amps. Add up the power consumption of your units. It is usually on the back if not in the spec. sheets of your user manual. Yes, the units have battery back up, but response times are important. I recommend selecting units from the smart line. There is another thread running. We have been through all this in the last 24 hours. Look at that thread!
