Please Help Yamaha RX V663 Receiver

I just got Fios TV in high def and needed to switch from RCA plugs for audio and video to an HDMI cable. However, now the video works for 30 seconds and I get a blue/green screen on the Hi-def tv. The audio carries through just fine. If I turn the receiver off and on I get the same 30 seconds of video.
Fios had me connect the TV directly to the TV and everything works so that rulls out the FIOS Set top box.

The receiver plays blue ray movies just fine and if i plug the FIOS HDMI cable into the DVD HDMI input I get the same 30 seconds of video.
Any one have an idea on how to fix this?

Welcome to the forum!

The first thing that came to my mind was that the new FIOS box doesn't support HDCP (high-bandwidth digital copyright protection). The RX-V663 won't properly output the video to your TV if the FIOS box doesn't support HDCP. I can't say if that explains the 30 seconds of good video followed by nothing, though.

If you check out page 46 of your owner's manual for the 663, it explains how to cycle through some information about the HDMI connection. It might help you troubleshoot this. If it says "HDCP ERROR", then it's what I mentioned above. It might be something else, though.

Thanks, but it did not help

I looked at the screen you indicated and the video signal is shown there and there was no error message.

Cable were changed with known good

Yes, I changed the cables with known good cables and even purchased a heavy shielded cable to no avail.
Thanks.

I looked at the manual myself and I'm coming up empty.
It sounds like a handshake issue, but that doesn't explain the 30 second thing.

toogle,
Have you tried turning everything on in order? Receiver box 1st, the 663 2nd, then TV.

My second guess would be a fault with the 663's HDMI input.

Trouble Shooting Ideas

Toogle,

To help trouble shoot, you may want to try:

1) Using the other 663 HDMI input (IN2 instead of IN1, or vice-versa) Remember to check/re-assign the HDMI input as necessary. If this works, one of the 663's HDMI inputs is kaput.

2) Connecting the FIOS directly to the TV with HDMI. If this works, the problem is resident in the 663 or the connections/handshakes into/out of it. If it doesn't work, the fault is more likely in the FIOS.

3) IF none of the above helps to isolate a culprit, try connecting the FIOS to the TV with Component video (three wires, PrPbY) connections and digital audio (toslink or coax) to see if eliminating HDMI from the equation allows things to work. Try the same, with the video signal routing through the 663.

Good Luck,

Nomo i think your correct. I too think it sounds like a hanshake issue. I saw problem when i installed a motorola DCH-3416 Dual Tuner DVR for Time Warner Cable to a yamaha 663 and saw the green and black screens.

To the OP i would use component video for the video side to the 663 and optical from the fios box to the 663 for sound. But i am not sure the 663 will upconvert the incoming signal to hdmi.

Seriously, I have no life.

This is a HDCP issue. Try turning on your components in a different order. Others had success with a different turn on sequence. Try several sequences.

I agree with everyone else on the handshake issue. Having had a 663 in the past, I would run component to receiver with optical for audio. Then component out to the tv. The scaler in the 663 is not that great and I did notice a significant pic quality downgrade when running component to hdmi so I would avoid that at all costs. Also, I know you have tried numerous cables, but I ran into a strange situation when swapping the 663 for my denon that had me stumped for a few hours. I couldn't get signal from hdmi for anything. I run one hdmi to the tv and use the receiver to scale and convert everything else. My tv is a wall mount and for some reason with the tilt to the tv, it put just enough of a bind on the hdmi cable that it would not seat properly to send signal. I plugged and unplugged numerous times with different cables but no luck. Plugged it into the front hdmi and it worked fine. Finally took the tilt off the tv and no problems. If you have a front or a side hdmi input on the tv, try it to see if it makes any difference. Gut feeling is you are probably screwed via handshake issues. Good luck....

Not even 30 seconds of Video

I hope this handshake issue isn't my issue too. I started my system with a Denon AVR-789, PS3, dish network HD DVR, a NES and Genesis in a closet all running to a panny P58S1 over HDMI. All was well...or well enough until i switched to Direct. After the switch to Direct's HD DVR i lost my video output, but I still had sound. The issue also existed with the PS3 when trying to use it.
I pulled the HDMI from the receiver and plugged it into both the PS3 and the Direct box separately. Picture and sound were fine when directly connected so naturally I assumed it was in the receiver. I used to have a spotty outage before, but that seemed to be a "you need to jiggle me issue". Since I think it's out of warranty and i don't feel like tearing the house apart to find the receipt i thought it was time to get a new toy. So after debating for a few months I picked up a Pioneer VSX-23thx and hooked it up last night. Once all connections were made I turned on the surge and powered everything up. Once again sound, but no video. It's like kool aid and no sugar, ham and no burger, peanut burger no jelly.
Doesn't sound like what i would expect a handshake issue to be, and since the HDMI works directly I wouldn't think the cord or shielding is the issue either.

***success***

I can't believe. Yesterday after reading what you all have indicated and a few threads I went to Radio Shack. I felt like a HDMI right angle/L connector would behoove me and since others have indicated that a HDMI switch resolved the HDMI issue I decided pick a couple up of these up to try. I then proceeded to try all possible order for powering up the components and switching inputs. None of this helped. I then connected the L connector and instant success. All video and audio is now working over HDMI.

Thanks to all in this forum and others!
