Hey guys. I've got a yamaha HTR-5940 and just got a problem after a storm. I know its a little old (5 years) but I am a college student and an electrical engineer so maybe I can fix it with some suggestions.

The issue: everything turns on and behaves as normal, but no sound comes out of any channel (even the headphone jack). When changing the volume a buzz comes over the speakers or through the headphones (whichever is active). If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

Have you checked out the troubleshooting section of your owner's manual (starts on page 92)? It has some things to check if there's no sound. The first thing that came to my mind was to check if the "mute" is on, but I'm not sure if changing the volume setting would automatically override that.

I doubt this will work, but you can put it into standby mode, disconnect the power cable, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. That's what the manual recommends for a strong electrical shock, but it's also for when it won't turn on (which yours does).

You could also try resetting the receiver - that's on page 91. If you can't find the manual, you can get it online or just ask and I'll type up the procedure for you.

Thanks for the reply. I have the manual. Its defiantly not on mute and there is a very loud buzz/static when turning the volume knob. When not turning the knob there is nothing all other operations, setting, input switching is as normal. something within the electronics is defiantly wrong not just a setting

Have you tried unplugging it for a while? That can help dissipate any existing charge on some components - such as a processor. It can sound silly to some people, but it does work for certain issues.

Also, you can unplug everything from the receiver (all inputs and speakers cables), then see if you still get that buzz from the headphone jack. Based on your description, it's the receiver only, but that can help verify that it's not something coming from a connected component.

yes, just tried some of the things you suggested. I removed the receiver from my rack and unplugged everything. Did the reset and continued with some tests using only some headphones. Still no luck. I also opened it up and checked some of the components. Nothing seams out of the ordinary no visual issues with any capacitors or anything no burnt smell of any kind. I will keep it unplugged for now.

Sorry none of that worked.

Bump for Tuesday - anyone else here have any ideas/suggestions?

Never dealt with this company but they apparently offer the service manual for your unit.

link here

For $10 to $12 it might be worth it. If you have access to at minimum a multi-meter you may be able to at least troubleshoot the circuit which is faulty. Then contact Yamaha for a replacement part - if offered. Or find the part online through a E-parts place.

Otherwise get it repaired at an authorized facility: Official Yamaha Link here

Best of luck!

Alright ill take a look at it. Im just worried its not worth the money to fix at an authorized service center. I wonder if anyone has experienced this behavior on any receiver and knows what circuit would cause this?
