I apologize in advance for the deluge of information you will see below. I do not want to leave anything out that could help solve my problem. That being said...

First of all, thank you in advance for any assistance I receive. I am a very competent computer guy but lack almost all knowledge when it comes to AV units. I am hoping with a little explanation and a few photos, the experts here can guide me in the right direction so I can stop banging my head against my computer desk and get to start enjoying the fine sounds I hear this receiver produces. Below I will give as much information as I can and if any further info is needed, please feel free to ask. My goal is to hook this up the best possible method these two devices will allow eachother. Im pretty sure I am not doing that at the moment.

Here is my motherboard and its specifications.
MAXIMUS V FORMULA - ROG - ASUS

The confusing part for me is dealing with the old connection types the Yamaha has on it. I do not intend to use the video outputs simply because none of them are HD as far as I can tell so I am simply looking for audio. Below I will include a few photos to give a clearer picture as to what I have and what I have done so far.

Since those photos were taken I did realize what "main" speaker meant and added the two more to give me my 7.1 but when I test the audio output on my PC I just get two tested speakers. One of the photos shows that almost all options seem to be 2 channel and the 5.1 channel option does not appear to work. UGH

I could add plenty more but would rather wait for any specific questions so I dont just throw out useless information.

Again, I need and appreciate all assistance. I am just quite intimidated by this unit. Feel free to email me directly if you really feel the urge to assist, otherwise I will check back frequently in the hopes this post has been seen.

Thank you

hey Ryan
I happen to know about both Audio and pc a bit ;)

on image View image: IMG 2188 - you have an option to choose default format as 5.1 dts (aka DTS connect) - this means all the sounds from pc will be default sent to avr in DTS format.
Unfortunately your avr does not support DTS. :( only Dolby digital or PCM*

I know for a fact that most newer avrs can process multichannel pcm - not sure if your old yammi might be limited to only stereo pcm input

try this test - keep the default format to 2ch 48khz and play dvd with dolby digital audio track. your avr should be able to play it
I recommend ether vlc or MPC-HC

Also don't get overly excited about 7.1 (vs 5.1). Your yamaha fakes the additional channels thru internal processing

I noticed you have set speaker impedance switch to 4 Ohm? Is that a right settings for your speakers? Which speaker do you use?

I also feel that you might need AC3Filter - AC3Filter to get work right
Here's a good read for you: SPDIF and AC3Filter

Thank you. I will look into all of this when I get home. I can get sound to play from all speakers but I don't think they are individual channels. I hope this is possible to get to work, but assuming its not, and since using the video inputs with today's HD signals doesn't appear possible, what would be the best way to use this unit? I don't really do a lot of music listening so is it basically a waste of time for me at that point? Are there people who would really want this unit for its sound quality? I suppose I could sell it to buy a more modern system for myself if I had to. I know for its time it was considered a great unit.

To be honest, the issue is not lack of HD video inputs, it's the lack of (a) support of DTS and (b) no analog multichannel inputs is what more of the issue at hand.
The yammi itself is a solid device, but these two (together) would be a show stoppers for me. If you just had avr with (b) you might just got away with on PC decoding and processing and simple multichannel amp to speakers using your yammi. I used to do that long time ago with another even even older yamaha rx-v592
Going forward I recommend you get avr with HDMI inputs as will be best way to connect pc to avr

Still not all long, you might be able to use ac3filter to do real time convert of audio streams into 5.1 Dolby digital 48Khz - it is the best spec your avr could process (aka separate channels)

Don't forget to post your speakers models, I got a feeling your impedance switch is set incorrectly as 8ohm speakers are much more common
