Please Help with HDMI Connection

Greetings,

I just mounted my TV over the fireplace in the living room while placing all components in a rack located in the closet to the adjacent room. I ran a 50' HDMI cable (50' slim series with redmere tech from monoprice) in the wall and through the attic.

The HDMI cable goes into the output of my receiver (Denon 2312CI) and then runs to TV. The only other components running into receiver are a cable box and blu ray player.

The problem I am encountering is that most of the time I do not receive any video to the TV. The sound is there but no video---the TV displays that it does not have proper input, but input connection is correct.

When I run the blu ray or cable box directly to TV (bypsassing receiver) it works fine. The company I purchased the receiver from is sending my a new unit to make sure the output is not the problem, but the represntive sounded very knowledgable and thinks that the true problem is the long (50') run of HDMI cable. The video signal seems to be getting jammed up by the receiver.

Does anybody know how to fix the problem. I am willing to replace cable if that is the problem,,,but crawling through a small attic with blown insulation is a drag. If it is the cable, are there better options? If it is the receiver, what are my options?

Thanks!

I would talk to Monoprice as well and let them know about the issue. Their standard 50' HDMI cable (22 AWG) I have personally used in conjunction with their HD-Base-T extender with great results. That would be 50' over cat-5, then 50' back to the TV over 22awg HDMI. All from Monoprice.

They will take the Redmere cable back and you can get the standard cable if that helps the issue. Or just order the standard cable and run it across the floor to see if that fixes things.

Still, it very much sounds like a Denon issue.

Have you hooked the Denon up online and updated the firmware?

I'm worried now since I just picked up a 2313ci.

I have hooked the ethernet cable to receiver and can play internet radio but am not sure how to do a firmware update. It did not appear to automatically do it and I did not see any screens on the receiver to do it. I looked through the manual and still no luck. After looking at the manual it appears its done automatically but I am still not sure. Hopefully that will fix the issue but I am doubtful. After a quick internet search I can't seem anybody else posting about the same/similar problem.

It is under Option Setup (it appears)... In your owner's manual on page 115.

Online:
Denon AVR-2312CI | AVR-2312CI Owners Manual - Page 118

I am doubtful as well. It sounds like the cable to me. I always recommend that people pull a couple of pieces of cat-5/6 along with any other cabling they ever run because of how versatile cat cabling is for various purposes.

Thank you for the response. Hind sight I would have certainly pulled the Cat6 cable alongside it. Due to the fact the cable works with other products, and has worked correctly a few times while being output through the receiver,,,,could it be an HDMI Handshake issue? And if so, how the heck do I fix it? Other than figuring out the proper sequence and powering them in the right order each time (what a hassle), is there a device I can buy that will solve that problem?

HDMI Handshake issues can be an absolute pain. Realistically, the long length of the HDMI cable is probably exacerbating the issue. Meaning that your signal is right on the edge and some electronics are handling it better than others.

In terms of mitigation, it is possible that one of Monoprices hdmi amps will help strengthen the signal but they may introduce their own order of power on needed.

For the price, I would try this product and return it if it doesn't work for you.

HDCP issues should largely be non-existent at this point. HDCP has been around for a good number of years by now, and it is far more likely that the issue you are running into is a cable issue. Since the cable itself uses a transmission side that draws power from the Denon receiver output, it is feasible that the Denon is not putting out the proper voltage necessary to run the transmitter at full power. It may be as simple as needing to put in a powered amplifier, which would be included in the 1x2 splitter listed above, but that may not solve things.

The hard part is that there is no easy way to diagnose this type of issue because there are any number of points of failure.

The culprit is almost definitely the Denon in conjunction with that specific cable.

The problem with that being the issue, is that you aren't getting that Denon fixed. You will have to fix the cable.

It is worth saying that I have installed a half dozen of the 2312 receivers last year with 25+ lengths of HDMI cable and every single one of them performed flawlessly.

This isn't at all what you are hoping to hear, but if you do have access to pull a new cable, then I would go down that pathway.

Pick up a 50' 22awg cable from Monoprice and a 50' CAT-6 cable from them and drop them down the wall. Not any fun in the attic, but at least the weather is cooling down some. And, once those two cables are in place, you should be good for a very long time.

Oh, and just for safety - I would put in at least 2 if not 3 pieces of cat-6. Cat cabling is getting utilized more and more frequently, and HD-Base-T is an unbelievable cabling standard, which hopefully will work it's way into consumer products in the next few years and eventually replace the HDMI cable completely.

BMX - since you have so much experience with the Denon 2312...have you had a good experience with reliability? My unit had what Denon thought was handshake issues... They would tell me to power up my components in a certain order to minimize issues... And when all else failed just reset the microchip. Over a few months the 2312 started turning on and off every 30 secs.

i love the sound... But after seeing others posting on the net with these same issues... Was wondering if its highly unusual or fairly typical... These being made in China and all. Thanks

P.S. - I use short (3 meters or shorter) redmere cables from Monoprice for all hdmi connections. I don't think this could be causing issues but wondered if you had experience on that as well.
