Please help with Denon AVR-883/1803

Hello folks, I'm new the forum, and also to home audio. I have been trying to piece together a system with limited funds, and it seems to have bit me in the butt. Anyway, I got a set of Cerwin Vega AVS-632 5.1 speakers, and was looking for a good but lower priced reciever/amp. Well, browsing online one day, I ran into a deal online where a Denon AVR-883 was for sale as an open box item for $250. When I researched this and found that it was the same as the AVR-1803, and read some reviews, I was very impressed and decided to purchase this item.
Well, got it finally and hooked up a Panasonic 5 disc DVD changer to it with an optical cable, put it a DTS Music DVD and was blown away...loved the sound. Anyway, then I go to playing with the thing , and found that when the DVD player would turn of automatically after a certain time of non-use, it left this annoying popping/clicking heard on all the speakers. I reset the microsprocessor, and this stopped so I started breathing again, only to find out that if I hooked a regular stereo source to the thing and tried any of the surround features it only sent hissing and crackling out the speakers, but on regular stereo mode it works fine. These problems are complicated becuse there was one time that the AVR-883 worked great in surround mode, and it still does if I use the optical cable sometimes. Then it started the whole popping/clicking noises again when you turn of the source while it is still in surround mode. Anyway, this is all confusing to me, and I'm probably confusing whomever is reading this...so I'll stop. If anyone, can be so kind as to tell me if I need to just give and send the thing back, or if this is fixable, I would owe you big time. I really don't want to send it back..because when it works...I LOVE IT...but crap its not working right. Plus I don't want to have to pay to ship it back either... When thanks ahead of time for your time.

Sincerly

I hate to put a scare into you, and I am by no means qualified to make this statement, but it sounds as though the microprocessor is going out on this thing. (BTW, I am more into computers than audio processors)

Thanks for the answer...as much as I didn't want to hear that...not to offend you or distrust your opinion but I think I'm going to wait and see if I can get a few more opinions from the rest of our audio gurus...so thanks again..

.....SJSamuel, you might consider throwing a local repair shop with a decent reputation about 30 bucks or less, probably not much less, to check the receiver out....it could be something to do with your pushing buttons and twisting knobs, but if it is the unit, don't you want to know?....is it still in warranty?....you mentioned things were ok choosing "Stereo'.....do you have the option of "7 Channel Stereo"?.....or 5, if yours is a 5.1?.....

Yes taking it to a local shop is a good idea...thanks..
and yes in 'stereo' mode it works great...I do have 5ch/6ch stereo and this mode too refused to work...all I get are hisses and crackles...
Not sure if this is of any significance but, if there is no sound being sent to the reciever from the source there is no noise from the speakers. For example I can switch leave the CD player off and play with the modes without any noise but as soon as I play something...the noise is back.

....."STOP THE PRESSES", "STOP THE PRESSES", haha.....

.....SJSamuel, jack that CD player up high on jacks and drive a new one under it, haha......

.....now that's if things are lovely with an FM-tuner source instead of the CD chosen.....

two things first what do you mean by jack it up higher...you'll have to forgive my ignorance...and 2ndly I already tried the FM tuner...and it too has the same probs...works great on stereo mode but not on any surround modes!!

.....I may have misread this one, SFSamuel....what happens when you try to play the FM radio from the receiver?.....

.....forgive my trigger-finger, SJSamuel....I'd say it's time for the shop....your CD player popping is not neat, either.....you might consider the Sony ES line, I've heard they are good....sorry to pitch gas on the campfire.....

.....hey, will do, SJ....I'm not on the South End anymore, but I went through Texarkana from both directions when I was....hope you're living in the Arkansas half of Texarkana....the "border town exemption" would apply to you, and you would get back all of your Arkansas state tax held out, FYI....Texas holds out no state taxes, so the exemption is worthless over in that half.....

Oh BTW, Mulester- Were you refering to Georgia Lass, in my profile????
I really like Dead Like Me.
Sad that it was cancelled after 2 seasons :(

(Edit:: So no ones lost, I sent a PM to Mule. Stating I was moving to Dallas Georgia soon. He replied Oh is your name Georgia. And I was in total shock from this false statement. And replied Please don't call me Surely (now if you don't get the last part then tuff luck)

alright guys...I'm back after numerous phone calls today and much frustration. If you have some advice for me I'll be glad to hear it.
First of all, I called Denon, and they confirmed my fears that this thing is either dead or dying or something to that extent. Anyway, when asked about what the policy on getting it fixed was...I was told that since I bought it from an unauthorized e-tailer my warranty was invalid so basically....100 dollors to fix it through Denon. Next I called hookeontronics.com...where I purchased the item..and they are very sorry for my inconvieniance but will refund me the full amount if I will ship it back to them.
Bottom line...I'm out the money it costs to ship this thing back...at least.

So my question for you audio gurus is this...I paid less than $300 dollors to have this thing at my door with a 2 year extended warranty from a 3rd party warranty service. Now looks like I either spend more money to get it going(which I can't right now), or I ship it back and get another amp. Question: Can I even find another amp with similar specs for that price? Well, for all of you people who wade in this market way more that I do...I will be glad hear your opinions and it will very much appreciated.

Wow, hookeontronics seems like they are doing a great deal for you.
Since it was an open box item, question-do they have another one?
If not, would they give you a store credit for purchase of a different unit?
Their extended warranty looks as though it has paid off, and they are honoring the deal.
So I am assuming they would work with you, if instead of your money back that they give another unit for the same price. Even if its a slightly better model.

.....hey, Texarkana....let's see, SJSamuel, you can ship it back to the factory, on your nickel, and pay 100 bucks for it's fixing, and they'll very graciously mail it back, considering they made about 110 bucks off one, they didn't have to cover....that's door one....125-130......

.....I know they all do that selling warranties rights, but, you can mail it back to the dot-com for the same nickel, and get a different one, or maybe store credit on a new one, and no hundred drained from you, just the nickel, and that's door two....25-30.....

.....Texarkana, this is Little Rock, your path is clear, Little Rock, out.....

.....live and learn, where we shop....

.....with a credit-card number given, ahem.....
