After reading a lot of reviews, I think I have the choice narrowed down to three projectors. This is based on spending under $3000.

Panasonic PT-AE900U
Sanyo PLV-Z4
Sony VPL-HS51A

The problem is we don't have any showrooms here in Fairbanks,Ak
so I would like to get other users comments on which would be the
better projector! Room is 17'W x 25'L x 8"H. Seating would be at about
15-20ft. Good light control. I have seen the Sony HS51 (not A) in action
on a trip to Spokane, It was beautiful! Any help would be appreciated! :)
The screen that I like is the 106" Carada Criterion w/brilliant white
Thanks

I personally would not go for the Sony - I just think that their pricing vs. technology is a bit high and behind what Panny and Sanyo are offerring. But, between the Panny and Sanyo you have a very - VERY - tough choice.

At that viewing distance, I would probably go with the Z4 just for the sharper overall image. But, it really requires a good source like HDTV or a well upconverted DVD. Perhaps pick up a Panny S77 DVD player to go with it.

The AE900i is no slouch either though and some consider it a better projector. It really is different things that make both projectors great and neither holds an obvious advantage. I know that I prefer a sharper image over the smooth screen technology that the AE900 delivers. But, I have seen the AE900 and still wouldn't be bummed to have it in my home.

Of course there's always the Epson 550. ;)

Make sure to check www.projectorcentral.com and do some reading if you haven't yet.

Having seen both in action (Z4 and AE900U) I was really torn. But in my situation I sit relatively close (less than 1.5x the screen width). The pixel structure on the Z4 got to me after a while, and my wife is really sensitive to it. So when the Visual Apex deal came around on the 900u I jumped on it. $1550 for a projector of this quality is hard to beat. That, and they extend your warranty by a year and give you $300 in blockbuster rentals. Not shabby.

PM if you want details on my decision process or more detailed impressions of the 900.

I agree that it is a difficult choice between the Z4 and AE900. Though I haven't seen either of those, I have seen the Sony and, though the picture was good, I won't even consider a Sony product due to their business practices. I am going to spring for a Z4 or AE900. I just want to see one in person first. I can't find anywhere to demo one.
