Please help me choose/setup rear surrounds in my ht room

In my current ht room, I can't wall mount rear surround speakers so I thought about using a pair of more omni-directional speakers such as the Mirage OMD-5s on 30 inch stands and placing them behind my listening room couch. I currently have a pair of Energy RC-30s as my rear surrounds but the sound from the RC-30s was too direct. It didn't matter how I positioned the RC-30s on the floor, the surround sound effect was never as good as placing my RC-30s on wooden boxes that were 12" high.

Would omni-directional speakers on 30" stands produce an effect that is similar to high wall-mount surrounds?

Any information you are able to provide to a noob would be greatly appreciated.

Before you spend your money I feel I should try giving you a few suggestions with the Energy's.

First of all - where do you have them aimed? Try aiming them at a near wall to mess up their imaging effect.

Second try reducing their level by 3db

I tried re-positioning the RC-30s a number of times. Unfortunately, the distance from the walls/ceiling to each speaker is not equal.

I've played with the various settings on my avr and just can't seem to get the same experience as when the RC-30s were elevated about a foot above ear-level.

I thought about that but I want to keep the room semi-attractive

I should also mention the the ceiling is about a foot lower on the side of the room with the doorways.
