So.....after trying the Yamaha DVD 1500, 657, and 750, I have decided to stop screwing around and got a Denon 2910. It's a demo, on loan, so i don't open another box and return it. The folks at the local store are getting a little miffed.

The Yammies, albeit nice machines, may be a tad bright sounding combined with my bright Polk speakers. The denon's, i read, are warmer sounding.

The guy at the store says the Denon is in a different class. I tried it briefly last night and it seems like a nice piece. Bass seems kind of weak compared to the Yammie (maybe the lower crossover frequency??) but when i turn on "source direct" the bass is much much louder. Is this where most listen to SACD and DVD A's? With the source direct on? I understand it turns off all speaker adjustments. Why is the bass 10 times louder? How do most set up their player?

The Denon is definately "warmer". Nowhere near as bright.

My concern is the Denon is a year old, will not play DivX. I have read it has issues with burned DVD's. Anyone have this issue? The Yamaha played everything except HDCD.

Speaking of DivX, is it really that important? I would rather copy a movie to get the DTS soundtrack and use DVD Shrink.

Please, any user comments, experiences, opinions on this Denon would be appreciated. i would love to hear from someone who has had both players.

I know there will be a new Denon model soon. I got the 2910 for $865 Canadian. Is the new model that much better?

Hello
The DVD 2910's analog outputs are a little better than the Yamaha
On the video side the 2910 is definitely better than the 750 or the 1500
I have run all three through the Silicon Optix Benchmark tests.
The 2910 has extensive control for video calibration. Make sure that this DVD player is calibrated for your display device.

If this unit was a demo or floor model chances are that the Gamma tables and picture setting have be played with. Another thing to check is the firmware version older versions suffered from significant macroblocking/posterization newer firmware versions have corrected much of this problem.
