I have a question for all you smarter then me guys out there. I have a Onkyo Txsr-805. And I am getting a ps3 slim. I am planning on it bitsreaming to my a/v. But is this dts bomb somethig I should worry about? What can I do if this is a problem. If I should update my firmware how do I do that? And how do I tell what firmware I have now. Thanks

You should contact Onkyo, they will tell you how to check your fw ver. and if your ver. needs to be upgraded. They will also be able to instruct you on how to obtain the new fw and install it.

I have done firware upgrades on my Onkyo and if you have a version past 1.04 you can easily do it yourself.

Here is a link over to AVS wher a very kind sould has put everything you need in one place: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1016297

One thing to note is you cannot bitstream Dolby HD or DTS master from a PS3. Those codec's can only be decoded internally on the PS3 and sent to your receiver as LPCM. - Edit I am wrong. See post below.

The new slim PS3 can bitstream truehd and dts-hd master audio, but the old "fat" ps3 can only decode them internally.

That apparently isn't 100% true since there is a member here with a Slim who says he can't get his to bitstream.

Then that member needs to adjust some settings, or has a defective PS3 slim.

The DTS Bomb was an issue with just a handful of Blurays that used Bitstream (the last Rambo had a DTS bomb) if I recall if you have version 1.7 or 1.8 than it's a non issue. From the Onkyo 805 thread I have read that even updating the firmware doesnt completely fix the issue and the you have to use a "dongle" CD that a few members over at AVS commisioned and have to play it via a CD player via Optical input 1 to fix, but don't know how truthful this is or not. I had my 805 updated at the Onkyo Regional Center in Boulder CO to ver 1.8 and havent had a single issue. Mine was ver 1.6 before and I just had my Bluray send the signal as LPCM to not even worry about it, but now that it's been updated, I bitstream and havent had a single "bomb" go off (knock on wood).

I agree contact the Onkyo service center and speak with a tech, do not call Onkyo Customer support, because those idiots don't know sheyat. I had many questions about my Onkyo and after pulling my hair out with Onkyo CS (whom I'm convinced couldn't pass a 3rd grade compentacy exam) and I finally just called the Regional center and a tech answered all my questions.

I use 1.06 on an 805 acting as pre, and I've never experienced the bomb. However, I had issues with Harold Kumar Guantanamo, and that is known as a defective disc, and last I checked, they weren't doing anything about it.

With that specific title, just don't select the MA track. Just use the core.

the link that adk gave you has this in it, for checking the FW:

Check Your existing Main firmware version:
=> Turn on Your unit, push & hold "Display", press "Standby", release buttons
=> To see additional firmware infos (DSPs etc) press button underneath "Tone" repeatedly ( don't wait to long)
Onkyo / Integra have told us, that these updates should not be installed if Your current firmware to start with for 905 / 8.8 is below 1.05 or 875 / 9.8 / 885 is below 1.04 (same seems to hold true for the 805/7.8).
Many users have used these updates on older firmware versions too without any problems.
If You got an earlier version to start with, there might be additional steps to be taken (DSP:hardware modification + HDMI+NET:additional firmware) !
If this is the case, and You need them, contact Your nearest Onkyo / Integra service point for the complete update procedure.
I told You so...
A friend that buys me a bunch of discs gave me the Harold Kumar, as well as the last Rambo, and the latter title had zero issue on my system.
