Hi guys,
im in a bit of a dilemma at the moment.
I have an old LG 42" plasma tv that has DVI inputs ( that cost me $3k 2 years ago).
I also have an HDMI upscalling dvd player that i wish to use with my 5.1 AV amplifier/reciever. The reason im doing this is because i know that DVI only supports video, so im using external surround sound for audio. Also my component inputs are dead :)

So what i've done is....

- plugged a dvi to hdmi converter into the tv
- plugged the tv input into the hdmi output of the amp
- plugged the hdmi/DVD input of the amp into the hdmi output of the dvd player
- plugged in all 5 speakers and sub into the amp (wire clamps).
- tuned into DVI mode on the tv, turned DVD on the amp
- turned surround sound on
- turned PCM mode on dvd player

I thought at the very least id get audio... but yeh no audio or video.
however when plugged directly from dvd player to dvi i get the visuals..

In theory i thought what i did would work as im seperating the components of video and audio.

Is there something im doing wrong? or is it just not possible to squeeze sound out of dvi via an amplifier/receiver.

Any relevant response will be much appreciated.

Could you please post the equipment models? Do you get video if you plug the DVD player's HDMI cable directly into the TV's DVI port?

Hello,
Yes - i get video by plugging dvd directly into the dvi port.

ok this is the equipment that I have:

- LG (106cm) RT-42PX 11 plasma tv
- TEAC AG20D 5.1 channel Receiver (3 hdmi inputs, 1 hdmi output)
- TOSHIBA SD-780KY DVD player
- LG 5.1 external speakers (that work via radio from receiver)
- 2 x HDMI cables
- 1 x DVI - HDMI converte

thanks :)r

Do you have the manual for the Teac? You may have to (if not yet) setup the video input so that it will output the HDMI input for the DVD player when you select DVD with the Teac. For audio, try selecting SPDIF/RAW instead of PCM in your DVD setup menu.

all fixed, ended up being a faulty receiver in the end.
however i did have to setup video input to output hdmi. was a little tricky with this system.
thanks for all replies.

How did you figure out it was a bad receiver? Did you end up exchanging it? It sounded to me like it was a problem with HDCP handshake.

It seems that there have been a LOT of problems lately with this. Could be that there are more HDTV's and sources out there now.

I doubt the TV will will make the right HDCP handshakes to your receiver via the DVI converter. I would connect the DVD player directly to the TV and use digital audio, best, or analog audio connections from your peripherals to the receiver.
