Mine came with four brightness modes (dynamic, game, theater and standard) the dynamic and game being pretty bright (ie torch mode). For general TV viewing and movies in the evening I prefer the theater mode. On a bright, sun lit afternoon watching football or the like, I bump it up to standard mode. So, to answer your question, yes.
For movies, the lower settings give a more film like presentation.
