Hey Guys,

I am new to this site and relatively new to the home theater and audio systems. I have been trying to understand everything but man is there alot of information to process. That being said, I am trying to put together my home theater system and I have my eye on the Pioneer Elite 92 and the Onkyo 805 (both of which I can find for around $750). Between the two which would you recommend? I want it to be somewhat future proof and sound quality and power are more important then vidoe capabilities (I however don't want the video capabilities to completely suck). Thanks for your help!!

On a serious note, the Onkyo has power. It's a 50 pound monster receiver, it can dish out power like no other in it's price range. But it comes at a cost none the less. The TX-SR805 runs hot enough to cook most meals on, so it needs to be well ventilated. Also consider that heat and electronics don't get along, and that it may shorten the life of the receiver and other electronics nearby that may absorb some of the heat it passes.

Both are great receivers that can power most any speaker arrangement. If you don't mind a bit of back breaking work (lugging the TX-SR805 into your setup) and have a serious upgrade bug (longevity may not be a major concern in this scenario), then the Onkyo might be right for you. If you plan on this being a lasting setup, look around a bit longer for different receivers that might fit your needs even better. If you find nothing that fits the bill maybe the Pioneer is the right receiver for you.

I had used an Onkyo 602 for a year when I decided I needed to upgrade, and my choice was also between the 805 and the 92thx. I have plenty of space in my enclosure and I wasn't worried about overheating the 805, but I wanted to change brands so I went for a $630 92thx refurb off ebay and I've been very happy. I have hooked up my nad 2200s but there isn't much of a difference in sound so I've decided to sell them (the pioneer amp section is quite robust). IF you can find a refurb 92 for around $650 I'd go for it. Goodluck!
