as for my setup its a 5.1, recivers i had in mind was the Sony-STRDN1040, YAMAHA RXV675, Onkyo TX-NR626, Denon AVR-X2000

Scratch Onkyblow for a start.

The Sony looks tempting. However Sony have not been known for good receivers, but they are working hard to catch up so I would not dismiss it.

Yamaha probably have the best reputation for reliability, but I think to play safe it comes down to the Yamaha versus the Denon. I leave it to you, but if you push me I would give the edge to the Yamaha in that price range.

I'm not a Celt. I grew up in the Medway Towns, and lived on the North bank high up by All Saints Church Frindsbury. The house used to be the vicarage and was built in the reign of Queen Anne. From my bedroom window I looked down across the Medway to the dry dock where HMS Victory was built. We had a holiday place at Suffolk, just north of Southwold. My father was a Sapper and he was the officer in charge of mine removal on the East Coast from Harwich to Skegness after WW II. So that is our connection to East Anglia, which I love. I spent many a happy summer up there.

I went to school at Downside Abbey at Stratton-on-the-Fosse in Somerset. Not on the flats but in the Mendips. So that is one of my connections to Somerset. My paternal grandmother lived at Bantham, Devon.

My wife and I emigrated to North America in 1970. We now live on Benedict Lake in the Minnesota North woods.

Anyhow baton down the hatches this weekend. The polar Vortex is just leaving here again. It speeds up the jet stream when it sets up just North West of here over Ontario. So I knew you would be in for another round. Sure enough when I watched the 6:00 PM news (noon our time) there was the next vigorous system on the way to you.

Our winter has been just brutal, a true Siberian winter this one. We have been pretty consistently colder than the North Pole!

wow i guess that lake is frozen over? we seen the massive cold front over the us on the news over here, its now starting to snap over here, winds are not to bad today but i guess its the quiet before the storm so to speak, isn't Benedict lake near Idaho? sorry im rubbish when it comes to places in the U.S.

as for the amp i'm thinking of going for the yamaha, lots of good reviews from owners, although the denon has good reviews too, how come the onkyo's are rubbish now? years ago there used to be pretty hot stuff.

Onkyo got into problems a few years ago. Basically they were adding too many features at too low a price and corners were cut. They had underrated caps for instance and a bunch of HDMI board failures. They were bought by Gibson Guitar two years ago, but the jury is still out on that arrangement.

Yamaha are a huge corporation with many divisions. Denon and Marantz are owned by Mitt Romney (Bain Capital), but run as separate divisions. He has just sold off McIntosh to an Italian outfit.

We have 10,000 lakes in Minnesota, Benedict Lake is near Walker MN and part of the Leech lake system. We can boat into Leech Lake from Benedict. The Lake froze up on November 27 and the ice did not go out until May 15 last year.

Benedict Lake in winter.

And in Summer.

Wow that looks amazing TLS! always loved the U.S and the countryside! majorly jealous here!"!, cold snap has definitely arrived this morning just gone down to -2 and the winds have picked up!,

Going to order my new Av receiver this monday, im confused as to which one to go for, my head is leaning towards the Sony strdn1040, but the experts seem to be giving it high ratings yet the users are far from happy, so i feel either the Yamaha RX-V775 or the RX-V675

I think I would give the Sony a miss. It really is untried. Also Sony are short on resources, their debt was downgraded to junk status a few days ago. Bankruptcy looks increasingly likely.

It does come down to the Denon versus Yamaha. It seems from your post that you need the lowest risk purchase. I think that gives the nod to Yamaha in the reliability stakes.

It's -29C here this morning with a with a wind chill of -38C. This is not as bad as we have had it, but this polar air mass has not really moved as far north or as fast as expected. We are now forecast for much lower than average temps for the next week at least.

I see you are in for a hammering over the next few days. With the current set up here, I think the prevailing westerlies with increased jet stream velocity will continue for the near term at least. So expect more of the same. I see flood warnings are out for Kent again, so my brother will have his hands full.

It is a very strange set up. The arctic oscillation is strongly negative, and the North Atlantic oscillation strongly positive. This has existed for a good deal of this winter. Normally both these oscillations move together. So much so that many experts have come to regard them as the same side of the coin. According to NOAA this has never happened to this extent before. In addition the Pacific state is ENSO neutral. This latter gives maximum push for moist air to move west to east. The negative arctic oscillation pulls cold air down into the lower US, and makes us colder than the North Pole here. The strongly positive north Atlantic oscillation in this set up drastically increases your westerly wind speeds coming off the Atlantic and makes those westerly gales moisture laden.

It looks as if this pattern is set in for the next several months, with brief periods of relief when the arctic oscillation goes positive. NOAA is calling for colder than average temps and above average snow fall here through April.

I ended up getting the Yamaha RXA830 good choice over the others i suggested or a bad move? the reason for my decision is i want to upgrade my speakers this year and i thought a better amp will be good in the long run,

do you believe global warming is to blame TLC or is it just the world changing? yes i heard about the flood warning for Kent, flood warning tonight for cornwall too!

I think you made the wisest choice. I certainly agree with speaker upgrade. You live in a country that produces most of the best speakers in the world, so count your blessings.

There is global warming, but no definitive proof as to cause. Unfortunately there is increasing concern it can not be reversed. Despite this cold winter, out winters have been trending down for cold severity for about 30 years.

However this winter has caught the attention of NOAA researchers, and they are starting a project to try and understand if the loss of ice in the North Pole is causing the arctic vortex to be less tightly wound and prone to spin off large junks.

This is a major concern not just here, but for you especially. Just for the sake of argument, lets suppose that the arctic oscillation were positive and the North Atlantic oscillation strongly negative. Now you are a lot further North than here. Winnipeg Manitoba is on the same latitude as the southern tip of Cornwall.

So in the above scenario I described a polar vortex could then spin off and plunge the UK into snow and ice, with temperatures in the -30C range or worse. That would be a total disaster as your houses and infrastructure are not equipped for that. There should be contingency plans for it though.

Just look what happened this week in the deep US south, especially Atlanta. Total chaos and no forward planning for the event.

Hey TLC, just an update got my receiver coming this tuesday, just a quick question, i have banana jacks on my speaker cables, is the yamaha like the pioneer where you have to take little plastic plugs out before you can plug the jacks in?

the weather here at the weekend was very bad, we lost alot of cherished monuments and buildings, in this video at the start of january you can see the waves getting close to the building, last night it got battered!!

I don't know if there are plastic plugs, but it takes banana plugs.

Nasty weather. Some Frenchmen ended up on your rocks I see.

I just got of the phone with my brother. He is very concerned about what may happen this week. There are problems in lots of areas now in Kent, especially south of Canterbury along the Stour and its tributaries. It looks as if Yalding is under the gun again. Floods are politically toxic.

From the bacteriology it looks as if the Somerset Levels will be uninhabitable for a very long time. May be Glastonbury will go back to being an island!
