Pioneer VSX-33 HDMI Output 2, no video source to Mitsubishi HD1000u Projector. Help!

Hey Guys,

Just picked up the Pioneer VSX-33 with 2 HDMI Outputs for my LCD and Mitsubishi HD1000u projector.

The projector is 720p with 1080i upscaling, and HDCP support.

Having trouble getting video/audio working when switching to the HDMI 2 Output to the projector. Projector displays No Input, and the Pioneer displays "Please Wait" (never stops)

On one occasion I was able to get the Home Menu screen to display for about 2 seconds, and I was also able to get the cable box input to display for a few seconds as well.

Direct from the source over the same HDMI cable I can get everything to work fine.

I tried playing with the video parameters with no luck.

If I switch off the HDMI input on the projector, Audio starts working on the receiver.. weird.

Appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance!

Just for follow up, the projector is 720p native, and will upscale and downscale to 720p. Here's a pic of it running 1080p 60

I dont have the ability to add pics yet, add the h t t p to this:

It's almost like a sync issue, the VSX-33 is tryin gto sync at different times than the projector? Still doesn't explain the drop out when it did connect the two times for a few seconds.

Most likely an HDCP issue, but have you tried disconnecting the LCD completely and just using the projector through the receiver and making sure the receiver is set to only output 1080i or 720p video?

I've used the Monoprice HDMI splitters with good results between a LCD and projector without a problem, which is another option. But, when you start having HDCP issues, it's extremely hard to get to the solution.

So I had another recommendation that it might be the length of the cable. I hooked the projector up with the HDMI Out 1 cable that went to the tv, didn't work either.

I then tried swapping back to the TV, and couldn't get a picture on the tv. tried changing inputs on the tv again, no go. Power cycled everything, nothing came up. Even when I went into the menu settings, when the receiver should have been displaying an image, no go. Also tried different inputs (xbox, cable box, apple tv2) and I can't even tell you what combination it takes to get it to work on the tv its so random.

Is there a certain order I need to power things on? I've tried every combo I could think of.

I can't seem to get anything consistent out of the receiver, I almost wonder if it's not working correctly.

If you plug the cable straight into your cable box and get an image, but then plug it into your receiver and don't get anything, then I would call Pioneer tech support.

BMX, I probably missed something, but I would think that the culprit would be the cable box and not necessarily the receiver. Lots of cable boxes of old or maybe even current ones too did not have repeater architecture.

I do like the idea of disconnecting the LCD for troubleshooting.

For the OP's question regarding power-on order, I would do everything downstream first. You can try upstream too just to cover all bases. The reason for downstream where it's source first, then receiver, then display, is because I think some displays of old only looked for that HDCP at the very beginning, and if they didn't catch anything right then, it would no longer try again.

edit: I got my downstreams and upstreams mixed up IMO, fixed now.

I assumed when he said that he tried different inputs that he meant that he tried different sources. Yes, it's definitely worth mentioning that if you are only using a cable TV tuner then that could very easily be the culprit. Think there is a sticky on the main page about cable boxes being the suck. Anyways, it still would boil down to HDCP issues.

I would pull everything off and start simple. One source - your AppleTV perhaps. Get that image on screen... to just the TV. Then bring up another source. Make sure you give it 10 seconds or so to sync up at least. Then turn off the TV completely, before you turn on the projector setup. Then try it with the projector. Make sure the one source to one display at a time works. There may be some issues when trying to send one source to two displays at once. That's a big HDMI headache for sure due to HDCP.

The most recent job I did I used this splitter to two displays and I had only one display at a time on, but I was using a Denon receiver, not the Pioneer.

Still a bunch of stuff to test and go through, and it'll be good if you can narrow any issues down to a single source/combination setup.

Did some more troubleshooting-

I hooked up Component from the cable box to the receiver, with HDMI out 2 to the projector. This did not work, which is weird as the receiver was doing all the processing and it should have worked (the receiver was generating the HDMI signal). This drove me nuts, so I pulled the TV out of the bedroom and brought it out, and hooked it up the same way. This worked... which means it's definitely a problem with the receiver / projector configuration, and its not dependent to any specific source. The HDMI port on the projector is verified working, if I use a cable directly from the cable box it works.

What settings could possible cause the receiver to not work with the projector?

Another thing to note- there is NO audio and NO video when using any source to the HDMI Out 2 to the projector. I would expect audio to work either way?

If I unplug the HDMI to the projector, sound works...

The only way to get audio to work, while the HDMI is plugged into the projector, is to turn off Vconv (Video conversion). (Sometimes this works)

My advice is to heed the advice already given by BMX, and that is to contact Pioneer support.

Normally I would advice contacting both Mits and Pio, however, after looking into it a bit, your Mits is HDCP compliant, and Pioneer has a history of HDCP issues with their BDPs back in the day, if I wasn't mistaken. Like Samsung bad.

You can contact Mits too for good measure, but I would contact Pio first, and my money is that the receiver that has issue. See if there are FW updates for either that address HDCP. I know that even Panasonic (who is really good about HDCP) had a FW for plasma displays specifically for mating with Onkyo products some time ago.
