hey guys,

total noob here. just got a pioneer vsx-23 and CANNOT get the subwoofer to work (sub is a Polk DSW MicroPro 2000). yes, plugged into the right place. i went thru the pioneer menus for auto set-up/calibration and the sub doesn't even show up as being recognized. speakers set to "small."

plugged the sub into the cable box to test it--and it works.

what else should i try? what could it be?

thanks!

Some receivers will have a "direct" mode which will route all of the music to the fronts even if set to small. Try setting it to stereo mode.

It is on stereo mode... Rear surrounds working. Auto set-up does not even recognize that there is a sub.

Then either:
  1. The sub is not connected (Bad cable? Not connected correctly?).
  2. There is something wrong with the sub (unlikely).
  3. There is something wrong with the receiver (unlikely).
  4. The auto-on function of the sub is not working.
First double check the connections and make sure you're on the right output and the sub has a good connections - both have bitten me. Second try leaving the sub in the "full time" on position. Some go to sleep and and won't wake up unless you use a Y-connector to connect the subwoofer cable to both inputs. Third step try another cable.

Strangely, I think it is the receiver...
1. I changed the cable 3 times.
2. Sub works if plugged into any other output.
3. Sub is on all the time (turned off auto-on function) and turned volume all the way up.
4. During receiver's set-up, it did not recognize the sub. I forced it to recognize it manually. Receiver then tried to "test" the sub three times and kept telling me the sub was not turned up high enough (but it was on max volume).

Looks like it's the receiver :(

May be the sub is turned down in the receiver. Go to speaker set up and start your test tones, and increase sub volume form the receiver until you hear the sub. If you don't here the sub as you turn up the receiver output then the receiver is a dud. Make good and sure when you are in your speaker set up menu it says sub yes.

Pioneer says to set LFE to 0--which is the loudest. Already tried this... Looking more like the receiver.

Dumb question, but have you specified "yes" to having a subwoofer hooked up to the receiver in the speaker setup?
