Pioneer VSX-23 as a pre-amp only use

I have noticed that if you want to use separates for your system, there is a wide selection for Pre-amps. however, companies that make great amplifiers seem to have very expensive pre-amps with crappy features. Why wouldn'y you use a pioneer or denon receiver as just a pre-amp?

I thought I could use Pioneer VSX-23 or SC-27 as just a pre-amp. Both have features that would trample any pre-amp made by many more expensive audiophile-grade companies (i.e NAD, B&K, etc). Pioneer does not have XLR connections I agree, but for example NAD does not use them anyway.

All said, wouldn't it be smart to use these receivers with great features as pre-amps and save whole lot of money?

thanks in advance

As long as the receiver has the appropriate pre-outs, then there's probably little difference. A receiver is basically a pre/pro with integrated amps anyway.

My last pre-pro was a Sherwood P-965. I was plenty upset to discover that I could have purchased the receiver version (R-965) for less money and the two units were IDENTICAL save for the amps.

I hope it's smart. I bought a VSX-23 and use it only as a pre/pro. :D

There isn't much difference between the two. However, if the differences are important to the OP, then the 23 would be the winner. Honestly, I only went with the 23 because I couldn't find a 21 in stock when I wanted to do my upgrade. The HDMI input on the front panel of the 23 might come in handy someday, though.

the only reason I want to get the VSX-23 is that it has 3 zone capability while the VSX-21 only 2 zone. The 23 has extra pre-outs for zone 3, otherwise I think they are very similar

Theyare both great. Just depends on how many zones you want or need. I actually like the ipod usb bunction on the front of them.
