Iam thinking to buy my first a/v receiver,i decided to go with Pioneer vsx-1018.I have question on the specifications about continous power and speaker set up.

What does the following mean

1) Continuous Power Output (20 Hz to 20 kHz, 8 Ω, 0.09 %),110 W per channel
2)Continuous Power Output (1 kHz, 6 Ω, 1.0 %) 140 W per channel

I will go for 5.1 set up.

Should i use 8 ohm or 6 ohm speakers ? which of the both produce better sound( quality wise) ?

Any advise for me ? Thanks

1) Continuous Power Output (20 Hz to 20 kHz, 8 Ω, 0.09 %),110 W per channel
It means each channel of this 7 channel receiver can provide an output of 110W continuously to a speaker that has an impedance of 8 ohms (most likely they refer to a resistive load), when amplifying a signal within the 20 to 20,000 Hz spectrum, at 0.09% total hamonic distortion.

2)Continuous Power Output (1 kHz, 6 Ω, 1.0 %) 140 W per channel
It means the same as above except it is for a 1000 Hz signal only, and in this case they refer to a speaker that has an impedance of only 6 ohms and allowing for a higher level (1.0 vs 0.09%) of THD. I suspect the only reason they provide this higher output number is so you can compare it with another product that specifies their output under similar conditions.

I will go for 5.1 set up.

No idea, you cannot go by the impedance.

We would have to know what speakers you have in mind, before recommending whether the 1018 is a good choice.

I am thinking to go with

Mission MV8 8 ohm speakers (5.1) set

or

Wharfedale Vardus 6 ohm speakers (5.1)

Looks like the MV8 are easy enough to drive by the 1018. When I was in UK years ago I was more impressed by KEF and Celestion and less so by Wharfedale. Obvious things can change so I am not suggesting Wharfedale don't make as good speakers. Another key factor is, how big is your HT room?

1018

Where are you finding one?....it is the old model and not available on most sites....excellent piece....Dont confuse it with the new 1019 which a few steps down in a lot of ways...

On your other thread (very similar), I did recommend you the Onkyo TX-SR607 for your Wharfedale Vardus 5.1 speakers combo set.

If you decide to go with the Mission MV8 5.1 speakers set, I'll recommend the Denon AVR-1909.

That's my opinion on best matching systems.

Oh, and say Hi to all your family and friends over there in the beautiful country of New Zealand. And don't forget to say Hi to Peter from me. :)
I'm sure he'll appreciate. ;)

I responded to you other thread but here if you have decided on the Wharfedale you may want to go with something more powerful. That being said, the 1018 can also do the job for a room of this size. It is actually 5 lbs heavier than the Onkyo but weight is only one factor. The Onkyo 607 does seem to have a stronger power supply.

Hi Peng,

How are you? :)

I'm a bit confuse with srk16 (the OP). He has two threads going on, and trying to get different views on the same receivers???
But in his other thread, he was referring to the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K.

It seem quite clear now that few people are agreeing on the Onkyo TX-SR607.
But somehow, srk16 is not totally convinced yet.

Anyway, just want to say Hi. :)

* By the way, the newer Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K weights only 19.185 lbs, compared to the Onkyo TX-SR607, which weights 23.810 lbs.
I guess Pioneer lost some weight on that model, compared to last year VSX-1018AH-K,
which weights 29.063 lbs. That's a total lost of 9.878 pounds (almost 10)! And some people seem to not mind!!! Oh well, loosing weight has some advantage for some people. But for amps? Hmmm... HDMI turbulance, USB port, I guess. ;)

Cheers,

Bob
