I'm looking at about 4 different receivers for about $500. The Pioneer VSX-1015TX has been the most impressive. Anyone who has it, or knows about it, please give me the pros/cons about it. Thanks.

well my friend I can tell you that i have the 1015 and it is a great bang for your buck receiver. I dont have any issues with the receiver and the remote that it comes with!

I'm also enjoying mine immensely. I love the fact that I can plug an amp on a whim (I may buy a 2-channel amp for non-DD / DTS listening). One of my better purchases.

I have also been enjoying my 1015TX. I can think of one beef off the top of my head:

If you want to use the multi-channel analog input (that is, if you want to listen to a DVD-A or SACD), you need to physically get up and press a button on the front panel to select that input mode. There is NO function on the remote that does this. For those of you with a normal setup, this is probably fine. But for people like me, where my receiver is tucked away and sideways, it stops me from using the multi-channel analog inputs.

Here's a picture of my receiver. You can see why I have a beef:

Thanks for the input guys. My most important want in a new receiver is good surround sound. The receiver I have now just doesn't have enough. It's a Pioneer VSX-D510, about 4 years old. It was part of a system in a box with center,L/R, and both surround and sub for $400. Even with the volume almost all the way up, you can barely hear the surround sound speakers, even with the fronts turned down and the surround way up. I LOVE loud movies with realistic surround sound. Is this the receiver for me??? I think it is, especially with the THX Select 2. Thanks again guys.

No doubt. It's a better movie receiver than for music (in my opinion). It handles my hogs (NOTE: Full size rear speakers. Overkill for the living room, but I love it!).

If you like playing loud and want a 7.1 setup, I think (depending on how power hungry your speakers are) the Elite series is more up your alley. They'll do a better job at driving all the speakers with power than the 1015TX. In stereo mode, the 1015 is strong, but as you add center and rears, the power drops considerably.

My receiver budget is about $500. I have a $1000 budget from my wife for A/V stuff I need. All I need is a receiver, DVD player/recorder, which I found for $129, and sub/4 surround/center speakers. With the DVD for $129 and the Pioneer for about 500, a have about 350-400 for the speakers. What speakers out of these do you think would be the best?

If you're going to be running micro speakers, or small bookshelves, the 1015 will do so with power to spare.

And the surround will be loud and clear??

What speaker package do you think will give me the best performance with the 1015 in a 13.5X19' open living room with cathedral ceilings?

Is your heart set on a small surround package? If it's possible, try and get the best Floor standing towers as you can. IMO, those are the most crucial sounding devices for home theater. I loath small speakers for mains. No matter how good they are, big mains just sounds fuller. Get the 1015, 2 front towers and whatever surrounds you want to get.

Or better yet, to aphease your wife, buy things slowly but with quality. 1015 and then 2 towers, a matching center will do you good. When she gets used to listening to your kickass system, it will be HER demanding that you spend the extra $$$ to buy the rest. Then, you can slowly add surrounds and sub.

Worked for me (GF, not wife), my cousin, and my uncle. I think it will work for you.

I know what you're saying about buying quality things slowly if I have to. For the front, I have DCM 3-way stacks with 12" subs. I bought those about 3 years ago for $400, and they perform very well. So all I need is the sub, center, and surrounds. I have the money to buy whatever, but even if I buy a little at a time, my wife doesn't want me to spend too much. I could spend mllions if I had it, but my budget is okay I think. I'm not set on small surround set packages, but I know for 350-400 to get sub, center, and four satellites, I almost have to get a package. If I bought them all seperately, I'd probably be spending over 400. Any suggestions as to buying all seperate, or a package out of the ones I'm looking at?

For $350-400 you may want to check out the Hsu Ventriloquist VT-12
www.hsustore.com. They are small speakers with a BIG sound! Read the
reviews at their website. Their VTF-3 sub was reviewed recently by
Audioholics! The only other way, is to buy pieces as you can afford them.
Good Luck! :)

Pioneer's website says the Elite does have 2nd zone and a 2 year warranty. Around where I live, all I have is Best Buy and Cicuit City. I know I can order online, but I don't like doing that. I just feel better having an actual store to go to if there's any problems, and if I need to return it for any reason, I can easily with no shipping or problems. Best Buy nor Circuit City doesn't have the Elite, they have the 1015 for $474.99 when you buy speakers from them at the same time, which I might be doing. Without buying the speakers from them, it's a little over $500.

If you can, find a friend or someone you know that works at Best Buy. The employee discount will take the price on the 1015TX down to under $333.
