I just placed my pioneer receiver on my tv unit and noticed that there is only a gap of 3 inches above it. The manual says that their should be 8 inches.
How bad is it if I leave it the way it is?

the other option is to place it on the top shelf, however, i wanted to leave the top shelf for the center channel speaker only, plus it will be close to the plasma tv as well, i dont know if it will cause any issues.

any suggestions?
will it overheat with only 3 inches of space on top?

I don't think that you'll have any problems with it like that.

I have a Pioneer receiver (VSX-1015TX) with almost exactly 3 inches of clearance on the top. It gets hot, but it's never experienced any sort of shut-down or problem - and I've had it there for three years and used it everyday for hours a day.

You can always add a fan or two (such as a PC muffin fan) if it gets hot or if you're worried about it.
