Pioneer Elite 72 & HD DVD question

I was hoping someone could help me out here. I have a Pioneer Elite 72 receiver. It is currently in the shop getting the firmware update for the HDMI. It's been there a week so I hope to get it back next week. I know, it's sad I've waited 2-years to get this done, but hey that's life when you've got a family. I plan on getting an HD DVD player for Christmas, but I was wondering how a 1080p HD DVD player would work with my reciever as it is only suppose to be able to pass a 1080i signal. If I have to connect the HD DVD directly to the TV via the HDMI, then I wouldn't be able to get the Dolby True HD sound from my receiver b/c the HDMI will be going into the TV. Can you split an HDMI signal so that I can run it to my receiver for the sound and to the TV for the 1080p picture? My TV is a Samsung HLT-6187S. If I remember correctly, you can't get Dolby True HD via the optical ouput. Well, if I'm going to buy an HD DVD, I'd want the better sound to go along with the picture or it's just not worth it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a 72 and used it with an A2 passing 1080i. I did try my Blu-ray player passing 1080p and a HTPC and the 72 will not do it. I would suggest using the player 1080i to the receiver so you can get the TrueHD and let the TV do the de-interlacing and see how it looks.

The other possibility would be and HDMI switch that has two outputs. Then you could send one to the 72 and the other to the TV.

Here is a link to one. http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI switch 3x2 port.html

I would verify that it will pass all of the audio although there is no indication that it would not.

This was one of the reasons I upgraded to the Onkyo I know have. It has a REON video processor to de-interlace 1080i and upscale my SD signals all to 1080p.

If your display has good video processing, you won't lose anything by sending it 1080i instead of 1080p.

Thanks guys. I didn't even think about switching the output to 1080i. If it looks good enough that way I'd be okay with it. I really want the sound, but a better picture is like icing on the cake.

Can't you simply get the digital audio out from the player and use the HDMI to the display?

Yes you can but, you will not be able to take advantage of the new lossless formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master which will only pass through HDMI.
