Is the Pioneer VSX-456 any good?
BoredSysAdmin Audioholic Slumlord Aug 22, 2011 #2 "any good" for what? Are you looking to get it at a goodwill shop?

The VSX-456 is an entry level model that has very basic features. So if you are comparing it to anything that has been released in the last few years it is severely lacking in features. If this is something you are going to use to power a small pair of bookshelf speakers in a dorm room/office or garage then it may be ok. We need to understand the application of the product to make a recommendation.

I'd think that even $20 is too much for it, but at 5-10$ i'd consider it.... if the features meet your needs Last edited: Aug 22, 2011

H humsin94 Enthusiast Aug 22, 2011 #6 I just dug it out of a pile of old stuff in my garage. I am currently using the Wharfedale Diamond 10.2 as a stereo. Do you have any good recommendations?

The VSX-456 will drive them. Have you tried it? What did you think of the sound? Is it lacking anything for what you want to use it for? If it sounds good to you, I'd save the money for now. Wait until you have more and can step up to something that will make a major improvement. If it's lacking, then we'll need to know a few things. Is this for 2.0 music or HT? % of each if both. Size of the room? What kind of music will it be playing? How loud will you play it?

BoredSysAdmin Audioholic Slumlord Aug 22, 2011 #12 what gmichael said and if you feel you need to drive them louder, Yamaha R-S500 should do the trick. of if you crave more bells and whistles - Onkyo TX-8050

H humsin94 Enthusiast Aug 22, 2011 #14 I use it purely as a 2.0 stereo in a small room. I listen to classical and jazz mostly. When I bi-amp, there's hardly any bass. When bi-wiring or standard, then the highs are slightly reduced.

M markw Audioholic Overlord Aug 23, 2011 #17 Proof positive This is the same schmuck who is spewing verbal diarrhea in the speaker forum trying to compare speaker cabinets to violins in a speaker break-in thread. He starts spewing a few pages in, but here ya go. If this isn't yer classic troll, I don't know what is.

H humsin94 Enthusiast Aug 23, 2011 #18 Wow, didn't know there were so many ignorant people on this forum...if you haven't noticed, all arguments have been objective and about the point. In fact, aren't personal arguments, like those made by markw, considered trolling??
