Hi,

What would be the best phono preamp (<$500) for a Rega RP1 turntable & the Denon AV1610 receiver?

Thanks,
Burton

For a receiver, you don't need to spend more than this.

If you are only going to use MM cartridges, to be quite honest, you don't need to spend more than this.
I agree with Doc, I have the Music Hall phono preamp with the Denon DL-110 cart and must say it is a good match and sounds good, the Music hall is quiet and very neutral if you will. Hope this helps.

The Cambridge Audio 540p (MM only for ~$100) and 640p (MM and MC for ~$180) are also worthy of your consideration. I recently replaced my 640p with a Quad 44 stereo preamp ( which is a very versatile preamp which is also fantastic as a phono preamp-virtually infinite adjustability via its cleverly designed tone and filter controls) because I thought I had a problem with my 640p (it turned out to be a phono cable connector problem) but was very happy with its performance in my system (VPI/SME/Audio Technica MM or MC into a Denon 3808ci). If you're into tube preamps, I also had good experience with the Bellari VP-129 tube phono preamp (MM only for around ~$150-I needed MC capability and sold it as a result), but you will need to experiment a bit with its 12AX7 tube to get the sound you like (a plus for those that like to roll their own tubes). BTW, TLS Guy is the reason I have the Quad 44, so you can't go wrong with his advice. :)
